What is the name of your country? How many languages can be found in your country?
Regarding the first question, my country is Nigeria which is located in West Africa, is one of the most populous country if not the highest in the African continent in which we are known for our cultural diversity, rich history, and vibrant traditions as much as my country Nigeria is home to over 200 million people citizen comprising a multitude of ethnic groups and languages as well.
In Nigeria we are known for our linguistic diversity with testament to our rich cultural tapestry, especially the Igbo in the SouthEast, with its tonal complexity and cultural significance, serves as a vibrant expression of the identity and heritage of the Igbo people within Nigeria.
As a matter of fact Nigeria is linguistically diversified with over 500 languages spoken across the landscape of my country Nigeria however the linguistic is dominated by three major ethnic groups Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo each with its own distinct language with English, inherited from the colonial era that serves as the official language and is widely used in business, education, and government and as much as other ethnic languages.
Among the listed languages in your country, how many are you familiar with?
Well, I am actually used to Igbo and the generally recognized language known as the English language, Igbo language is a tonal language spoken by the Igbo people in southeastern Nigeria and It is characterized by its tonal system, where the pitch or tone of a word can change its meaning, as matter of fact Igbo uses the Latin alphabet with additional characters to represent specific sounds, as the language features a system of noun classes, categorizing nouns based on inherent characteristics.
Also English is an official language of Nigeria inherited from our colonial masters, and remains another language I am familiar with as It serves as the primary language for business, education, and government as well, english is an influential language in Nigeria and is spoken with diverse accents and influences from local languages while it serves as a unifying language that coexists with numerous indigenous languages, reflecting Nigeria's cultural and linguistic diversity as it has contributed to Nigeria's global connectivity that facilitate communication within the country.
How has this language improved/helped your life and business?
There are many ways that English and Igbo languages have helped me in order to unlock opportunities for education and communication, hence the English has helped me with access to collaborate with diverse partners across different ethnic groups, and as It helps me in negotiations, marketing, and customer services, which helps my economic growth. The universal language has helped me to attain higher education and specialized training, both domestically as it empowers me and strengthens the national workforce as well.
As much as culturally, Igbo language preserves cultural heritage, traditions, and values, strengthening my social bonds and cultural expression as much as the combined influence of English and Igbo creates a powerful force for development where English provides global access and connections, while Igbo strengthens cultural identity and my local business.
Reasons why I need to teach my children Igbo and English language
There are so many reasons why I have to raise my own children bilingual in Igbo and English just to equip them with the best of both languages in order to prepare them with a force to navigate the globalized world with confidence while cherishing their cultural heritage and identity, as much as this unique combination empowers them to succeed in diverse aspects of life and contribute meaningfully to their communities and the world at large.
The decision to teach my children both languages is however, considering the vast benefits it offers for their personal, cultural, and professional development.
