The art of public speaking

To address a large audience you do not need meagre preparations. How about I show you some things you probably miss sometimes during your presentation. You in? let's ride.😉

But first, lets know what public speaking is
Public speaking otherwise oratory is speaking durectly to a live audience.

Emphasis is on live audiences so here are some keys that are tested and proven;

During a presentation

  • Overcome the fear: The first thing you want to do especially for beginners is to overcome your fright. Here's a good deal; do not make eye contact, look over their heads, establish that self confidence in you before holding the mic. Be bold and tell yourself this audience has no power over you, they can't and won't bite you so speak like you are talking to one person, like a known acquaintance or friends. Make sure the aura around you doesn't smell fear.

  • Be heard: If you ain't heard your efforts there was just futile. we want to hear you, listen to you and assimilate what we clearly heard. Try your best to be audible, do not scream you are not a 5year old seeking attention. If you use a voice amplifier hold it the right way and the right distance, do not obscure your face with it. Always have in mind that you want the last person at the extreme to hear you clearly.
    Do you love the diction language? yes we know but pls do not try changing your voice for the sake of diction. Do not fake accent, you'll totally spoil your presentation but do well to pronounce words correctly.😊

  • Breathe life: In almost everything, I love saying breathe life into it because when you're presentation is boring, you'll likely have more of sleeping eyes than listening ears except you want to be talking to the chairs anyway. Do not give a lifeless note, if possible add some humour, illustration or side gist. Don't go for far fetched examples or scientific research hard to understand, bulky and unnecessary figures
    Een your tonation adds beauty, and so do your smile. Remember to give a break observing your punctuations and notations. Your presentation is more meaningful when you apply proper rising and falling tone, proper word and sentence stress, breaks, eye directions etc.

  • Give a proper introduction: If you start your speech or presentation with"OMG, I'm so nervous" or " sorry, my voice is a bit coarse".
    Might switch your audience's attentions to your flaws and not your actual presentation. A proper introduction is just the right ticket to get your audience in the train with you but never lose brake with a whack content, keep the spirit throughout the journey. Don't serve too much unnecessaries. If you have a presentationon for 30 mins, make sure that your average listener takes atleast 5 things home and that'll depend on your presentation.

  • Be energetic: Many people have their different styles, some walk alot while speaking, others slightly and others they prefer standing still. What ever way, be energetic but do not over exert yourself. let your posture, facial expression, body language be involved in your presentation, but do not make it in excess. If you keep swinging your hands in a repeated manner that's mannerism and we don't want to see that. Neither do we want to see your face in too funny manners, maintain a balanced or neutral look . Make gestures not mannerisms.

  • know your onions: Gather enough fact and information, we don't want you wandering in words or using so much of 'you know' and fillers like 'emm, uhh, ahh'. Be sure and you must have made proper research and understood what you want to share, don't forget to be concised and convincing not confusing. Do not misinform, serve you presentation just the way you want it to be understood, don't create doubt in your audiences minds. know your onions even down to your conclusion, don't give good vibes at a start and disappoint in the end or starve us what we want to hear most.

We all love to give extemporaneous deliveries but without incorporating the necessary qualities we need, I doubt the quality of such delivery. These are just keys to good presentation on the d-day, how about before the presentation? We'll talk about that someday.

In your next presentation why not try out these key. With it, you are more than 70% ready to break a leg so go for it cos imma rooting for ya.
