I agree with you, reading should be encouraged for a lot of reasons. Developing interest in the area of study can also improve ones interest, I seem to remember being forced to study myself when I was younger simply because I had no interest in what I was doing, but over time, as I got older and started to develop interest in certain areas, I find myself doing this more often.
