Hello Steemians, I am pleased to have you here. In this post, I have discussed "Security Matters". Security gives people the peace of mind to go about their daily lives, and a well-secure community is more likely to develop than one that is faced with insecurity.

In your own words, what do you understand by the word security?

Security means the condition of not being threatened with any form of criminal activity such as robbery, kidnapping, fighting, or destruction of property. It is a condition whereby the people living in a community are staying in a safe condition that is free from any threat to their lives and properties.

In most parts of Nigeria, people are living their lives under threat, which makes it difficult to go about their daily activities. They live in fear because there is no security in their community, which we have been hearing in the northern and eastern parts of Nigeria. This means security is the state whereby people are being free from threat.

In your country, in what ways has the government been able to keep the citizens safe?

The government has been able to keep the citizens safe by deploying military men, policemen, and other armies to troubled places in Nigeria. Whenever there is a crisis in any part of Nigeria, the government will first send police to the area to make peace before sending the military when the situation has overpowered the police force.

The government provides military barracks across the 36 states of Nigeria and police stations in every community, which will help keep the citizens safe. State and local levels also provide security for their citizens.

Personally, what do you do for yourself or your family to be safe in your town or country?

In my town, what I usually do to be safe is avoid going out at night. I don't look for trouble, and I also don't show up. I usually stay on a low and vigilant level both in my apartment and when I am outside.

Also, due to the insecurities in the northern part of Nigeria in my town, there is a curfew, which usually starts at 8 p.m., and I obey the curfew rules. Finally, when going to bed at night, I ensure my door, windows, and gate are well-locked to avoid thieves entering my apartment.

Have you experienced or heard of any cases of insecurity (robbery or kidnapping)? What happened?

Yes, I have heard of insecurity, and I witnessed kidnappings in the street where I am staying. Last month, some kidnappers came to my street with their ammunition, such as guns, knives, and their dark-class cars, to kidnap an ex-minister of communication who has been contesting for governor.

My apartment is just a stone's throw from that of the minister and kidnappers were shooting their guns at the gate of the minister while trying to force themselves inside his house. In the process of exchanging bullets with the security men on duty, two of the ministers security were shot, which led to the death of one.

I quickly locked my door and switched off my light. However, the army came and overpowered the kidnappers, which made them not succeed in kidnapping anyone. As the army came, they all ran for their own lives.

What do you think is the best way to keep a home secure?

I think the best way to keep a home secure is the tips that I have shared below.

• Lock your gate, doors, and windows during the night or when going out.
• Install a home alarm system. This can help you know when someone has entered your compound.
• Install a CCTV camera in your home.
• Used bulletproof doors
• Install a motion detector light.
• Don't boost your properties or advertise them to the public; instead, stay low.
• Keep your spare keys in a lock box that no one knows about.
