My Neighborhood Watch #17: Reporting Events Around us

in Steem4Nigeria8 months ago

Good day steemians. I hope you all are having a great day. Before I proceed, I would like to appreciate @xkool24 once again for this opportunity to share what's happening around us with other steemians out there. On today’s environmental report, I will be talking about the infrastructures and basic amenities of Port Harcourt city, Rivers State where I reside in.

BAD ROADS

It has come to my notice that there are many bad roads in the rural areas of Port Harcourt. These parts of the city has been neglected and left undeveloped. In the town where I reside ogbogoro community, the roads are too bad to walk on. There are port holes everywhere. And the roads are rather bumpy and rough for even vehicles or cars to pass through. These part of the city has been abandoned as there is no effort by the government or any superior to look into it. This is both disappointing and disheartening. With a heavy heart, I beckon on the grass root government (local government) to at least look into this matter and bring about some little development in these areas.

This issue has deeply affected the cost of transportation in these places as most drivers are unwilling to pass through these ad roads and risk their cars and vehicle becoming spoilt or developing some faults. The few drivers who are willing to take these risk often double or triple their prices. Also this issue of bad roads are also affecting the traders who pay very high amount to drivers to carry their loads to the market for sale.

UNREGULATED DUMPING OF WASTE

Another issue I would like to report is the rate and way at which waste are being dumped indiscriminately especially during heavy rain fall. I usually see people dump waste into water bodies like the streams or rivers hoping that the water will flush away the waste. This is very bad as the result may lead to flooding. This is because when these waste accumulate in these water bodies, it can sometimes block the channels were the rivers and waters pass through causing the water to rise to a point that it can result to flooding. Most people are ignorant of these knowledge which is a shameful thing. On my own I try to carry out sensitization and awareness campaign to the few people I can reach. However I beckon on the government to also look into this matter and try to educate the masses on the proper way to dispose their waste.

Sometimes I see some individuals throwing a bag full of garbage into the gutters which are supposed to be kept clean for easy drainage. I have indeed tried to understand why some individuals behave in such a way. It is not as if there is no proper way of disposing these waste because there definitely is. The government has made sure of that. There are special agencies in charge of proper waste disposal. They move around the streets regularly in a big truck carrying garbages at some specific dumping sites so that these waste do not become a source of nuisances and reason for environmental pollution.

So why then do people still behave in such manner? I want to assume is as a result of ignorance and so once again I beckon on the government to improve sensitization on the proper way to dispose waste.

It a nice Report, I think your Government Will give attention to it

Bad roads and inadequate waste disposal have been a consistent issue in the Nigerian society. I hope it is addressed.
