My Local Recipe- Adalu
There are so many special recipes peculiar to Nigeria and my tribe, Yoruba in the southwestern part of the country but today I have chosen the one which is very natural and special to me, yes it's natural and you would see why as I proceed in this article. The name is Ádálù (local language) or Èwà àti àgbàdo (Beans and Corn).
To prepare this recipe, we normally utilize sweet brown beans and fresh corn, and other ingredients I will tell you about as we proceed. It's a very delicious and nutritious meal you can't do away with if you had tasted it before. The only downside is that its preparation consumes appreciable time.
History of Adalu
Adalu is most common among the Yoruba tribe in the southwestern part of Nigeria, although, it can be found as one of the meals consumed by other tribes of the country as well. The history of this recipe cannot be actually traced to a particular year of existence but it is established that it has been in existence for a long time among the people of Yoruba.
I heard from the elders that this meal is very rich during the olden days as such traditional rulers and the people under them used to eat it on special occasions when there is a cause to celebrate great achievements like bountiful harvests, special occasions in palaces and so on. Our old parents met it when they were born even their parents as well, we can say this meal has been in existence, hundreds or thousands of years ago.
How to prepare Adalu
The ingredients for this meal is very natural as I highlighted earlier and those that are to utilized are; Beans, Fresh Corn, Palm oil, Onions, Habanero pepper, and Salt. For this preparation today, let's see the measurable ingredients I have utilized in the table below.
Ingredients | Quantity |
---|---|
Beans | 450g |
Corn | 225g |
Palm Oil | 50g |
Habanero Pepper | 9 pieces |
Onions | 1 sizeable bulb |
Ingredients
Preparation Steps
- The first step is to separate the seeds of the corn from the kernel. The corn would be the first to be cooked in this meal because the cooking time of corn is longer than that of beans. I have utilized a knife for the separation, see the result in the images below.
- I washed the separated seeds in water thoroughly, poured them into the pot filled with water, and placed them on the electric cooker.
Corn being cooked
- While the corn is being cooked, I have blended the pepper and onions manually (using a manual blender). The corn was allowed to cook for 45mins when it's becoming softening and easy to eat. I washed the beans and poured them inside the same pot containing the corn, little salt was added. The onion was also blended and added to the mixture. See the images below.
- The mixture was allowed to cook for 1 hr till the corn and beans are well softened. The blended pepper and palm oil were added to the mixture and stirred.
The mixture was cooked for another 15 minutes and after that, the Adalu meal is ready and served hot.
Hot Adalu served
I can do without Adalu for some time, that's because there are other local delicacies as alternatives, and the fact that it takes longer time to cook Adalu and such time is not always available.
My Recommendations for Adalu
If you follow the steps closely, you will realize that nothing like seasonings was used in the process. This is a completely natural meal and delicious. You don't need any preservatives/additives for this meal which makes it very healthy for human consumption, think of the proteinous beans and high-fiber corn (with Vitamin benefits), you can see what great health benefits you'd be getting from this meal. As such, I highly recommend this meal for you, it's healthy and delicious.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I have shared with you in this piece a very healthy meal known by its local name Adalu (beans and corn) which is very natural, palm oil is a natural extract of palm fruits and salt was just added in little quantity.
Adalu is very nutritious and its existence has been a very long one which makes it hard to trace back to the exact year. I hope you will try to make Adalu someday. Thanks for reading my entry. I hereby invite @dexsyluz, @event-horizon, @olabillions, @pelon53, @edlili24 and @ruthjoe to participate in this contest.
