WHY DOES COOKING GAS SMELL LIKE ROTTEN EGG?

Have you ever felt so bad and uncomfortable when you perceive the gas odour in your home.

LPG is basically comprised primarily of propane and butane gas, and is odourless in its natural state. You can agree with me that this LPG generally known as cooking gas is very dangerous, because if there are leakages. Perhaps, it can cause terrible fire and devastating explosions.

This cooking gas is Naturally odorless, it would therefore be absolutely impossible to perceive or detect it's smell if there is leakage. However, the natural gas companies add Ethyl mercaptan to natural gas - a chemical which gives the natural gas it's distinct and unpleasant odour often described like rotten eggs or rotten garbages. This unpleasant odour is actually of an entirely different agent but has nothing to do with it's natural state rather, the odour helps detect leakages and this practice is an industrial standard.

So, if you notice that distinct rotten egg or rotten garbage smell, it is for safety measure - just to call your attention and to help you identify gas leakage and this smell is harmless.
If you can smell gas, check:

-If any burners on your cooker are accidentally turned on

-Possibly the connections point to your gas cylinder, or gas appliances and equipment
to detect the leakage.

-If your gas cylinder is close to empty – because whenever the gas is at the bottom or about to finish, it may smell stronger -even if it is not leaking.

-Ensure all your windows and doors are open.

Avoid any open flames

-Don't use phones or electronics near the leak.

Don't turn appliances or lights on/off.
