In your own words, what do you understand by the word security?

Security can be seen in different aspects of life. Security is that position where you feel you are far away from any form of danger. Danger can be of any form, health, financial, Food, political, Family, etc. So, being able to manage most of the level of risk, one can think of being in a secure state. But note, that it is not easy or even possible to stay aware of all the levels of risk.

In your country, in what ways has the government been able to keep the citizens safe?

The security of the citizens is the responsibility of every government, and my government is not an exception. The Cameroon government may have the false, but they are doing their best to keep the citizens secure.

Cameroon has a whole section in the penal code, which is delegated to the law covering the security of every citizen. Under the Ministry of Defence, we have the General Delegation For National Security (GDNS), which is answerable directly to the presidency.

The General Delegation For National Security is broken into different sectors with different specific tasks. Cameroon has Judicial Police, which are in charge of documentation and Public Security Police to ensure security of the population.

Under the Ministry of Defence, Cameroon has the Gendarmerie Corp. Gendarmerie is different from the military in that their affairs are with the national territory. The sector undergoes military training but is in charge of putting order during civic disorders in the population. The military is more external, to defend and protect the nation's borders from any attack.

Personally, what do you do for yourself or your family to be safe in your town or country?

Personally, as a Cameroonian, the first thing to ensure my security is to have a valid National identification card. I'm currently living in a crisis zone, and identification is important as it came at a time when the non-state party didn't want citizens to hold the national identification card. For that reason, the government imposed constant checks of the identification card at every stop in the town.

For the security of my family, we live in one of the calmest neighborhoods in the city with practically no gunshots around. We avoid keeping late hours, and fortunately, I am a fence resident. Due to the crisis in the town, I drop and pick up my kids from school.

Have you experienced or heard of any case of insecurity (robbery or kidnap)? What happened?

Well, I am currently living in a crisis zone. So, I live and experience insecurity daily with news coming from other angles of the region. The most recent was a lady who was shot for not respecting the restrictions of the non-state armed group. My colleagues have paid over $500 to non-state armed groups to collect his phone, identification card, etc. I have a lot of these stories happening around me.

What do you think is the best way to keep a home secure?

We can tell what will happen next, we can only do what we can do. Life itself is insecure, that is why just by walking. You can slip and fall, it will be a different story. Players have a trip in the field of play, and for the next few hours, they are dead. So, to keep our home secure. You have to be cautious with your surroundings and try to predict future circumstances. I will always say, to learn from other mistakes. We can invert new rules, find out what happens, and think of how to avoid it if it comes our way.

Saludos amigo.
