Introduction

Hi steemians, it's very good to be here again.

Time, indeed, has really changed. Ten years ago was really a long time for change to take place, especially in the price of items in my country. Ten years ago, we were still complaining of hardship, not knowing the worst days would be coming just as we are today in 2024. Let's dig into the changes in time around my locality.

Mention 5 things that was there in your country 10 years back that isn't here now?
  • Lantern

In the past years, the use of the local lantern was prevalent but today, nowadays, you find people with rechargeable lamps and solar energy is now in use even in my village. Solar panels are used to generate light.

  • Videotape/machine

I remember when my grandfather died years back, the event was covered using what was called videotape. This videotape then was the most talked about and widely used.

  • Photo printing/album

Pictures were usually printed and saved in old-fashioned photo albums. Nowadays, people have other ways to save their pictures. Printing pictures is not really in use. If there's an album, it's now a digitalised and rebranded one. I remember the popular "My Pictures, My Memories Contest" on Steem Kids and Parents community hosted by @ngoenyi. This is one of the media where people save their pictures and other social media platforms.

  • Intercom

Years back, I used to have an aunt who worked with Nigerian Telecommunication (NITEL). As it used to be called land telephone. Later, the land telephone later used Intercom as their network provider. Both the land telephone and the intercom network are no longer in Nigeria.

  • Radio set.

This is really in the past. I remember some years back my father bought a pair of radios for me to make use of. No one buys radio even if FM stations are still running. People now make use of their phones, MP3 players to listen, cable TV etc, to connect with the radio stations. Even its cassettes and recorders are also outdated.

Is the value of currency used in your country appreciating or depreciating?

This question just got me laughing because about ten years back, the Nigerian currency was way better than it is today. 250 naira per dollar, compared to 1700 or 1600 per dollar now, which is about 2.5 Steems.

So the Nigerian currency is extremely depreciating.

Deliberate on the prices of 5 commodities in your country 10 years back and now.

Let me start with food items.

  • A bag of rice was about 8,000-11,000 naira ten years ago. Now, it is 78,000 naira.

  • A tin of milk was for 80-100. Now it's 600-700 naira.

  • A tin of sardines was for about 150, about 0.110steems. Now it's about 1500 naira, 1.600steems

  • Like 250L Freezer was sold for about 35,000. Now it's about 250,000

  • A bag of cement used to be 1500–2500 naira a bag. It's now about 12,000

Has these changes affected you? If yes, how? If no, tell us your secrets.

The changes in Nigeria have affected everyone, except our "government officials", for whom all items are being paid for. I am affected, my children's school fees have increased, food items are not mentioned, is it about electronics, cement, is it cooking gas or even drinking water?

Nigeria has really happened to us all.
