SEC15 WK1: "Life On Social Media"

Imagine a world whereby you life is 'lived' online. Every activity, moment is captured and shared, every thoughts is posted and every feeling or emotions are well expressway through a caption or curated photo. This is the reality of life on social media for many individuals in this world today. It is a world of comparison, competition, likes, shares and comments, that has obviously become the main objective of using the platforms.

But is this life really or truly authentic? Because there have been controversies and arguments that we're loosing sight of what life truly is and social media is having negative impacts. Then, how do you see your or life in general on social media? Here is my take on the "Life On Social Media"

On one hand, social media is a very great way to foster connections and stay connected with friends and family, share good moments and express oneself creatively. On the other hand, there are privacy concerns and worries about what impact, social media will have on a person that really depends and share everything on it.

My opinion is simply that our daily lives shouldn't be put up on social media all the time. I also understand that there are certain desires to share our experiences with others, but I also think that there are lots of downsides attached to it. The major reason why I don't support that our daily lives should be shared on social media, is security and privacy. Sharing too much informations online about ourselves, can lead to privacy or security issues. There can be a threat to our wellbeing.

Also, sharing our daily lives on social media can lead to people neglecting their responsibilities and real-life relationships.

Well, I have come across so many people who does that, but 70% of them, are people I see online, more like celebrities. The rest 30% are my friends and closed ones. One I had experienced was that of my friend who loved sharing everything he does on Facebook. I always advices him, but he refuses to listen and he will always reply "What is the use of being on social media if not sharing your life with others?".

For sometime, his attitude continued that way, until one day, he posted his ATM card pictures on his timeline because he actually went for shopping with his cousins. I reprimanded him for doing that because I knew the implications of posting your banking details online. Under 24hrs, he received a debit of almost everything he had in his account. He came running to me and explained to me, instead of sympathizing with him I laughed my lungs out because of how depressed he was. We went to the bank, got a new card and deactivated the old from functioning in the hand of who ever has the details.

That event taught him never to share everything on social media. The impact of sharing his daily life in social media didn't turn out well at all!

I can't confidently say Yes or No to this question. There are some things that may be real but we may not have known likewise those which are not. Last week, the current winner of the popular Tv series/show, Big Brother Naija (BBNaija), Miss Phyna was brought on a show where she said something which caused an uproar online. She said that she met a guy at the club who asked for a night with her but she declined and rather asked for his account number so she can give him 5 Million Naira.

Confidently to this, I can tell you that it's not real. What happened to simply telling the man a 'No'? She should have said no to him and walk out from the place to show some maturity.

When I hear questions like this, I smile and say yes! Why? It is because Steemit is a social media platform that is decentralized and definitely different from other types of platforms. I love sharing my information here on Steemit because I see it as a safe place to do so! There are rules guiding this platform and they must be obeyed, where failure to do so will result to been muted.

In conclusion, our daily lives shouldn't be shared on social media. There might be desire to share our experiences but we can share things Which are beneficial, to everyone not the ones which are harmful to your mental and physical well being. Always remember to keep everything personal to yourself. Ensure your privacy to avoid regrets.
