Unquenchable Desires: The Allure of Greed

INTRODUCTION

Greed is the selfish desire to get more and more without being satisfied. It can come in the form of gluttony. A greedy person desires what everyone has whether he will use it on not, he doesn't care whether what he's reaching out for will be useful to him or her, he doesn't care whether there are people around him that have less or do not have at all. A greedy person can do anything to have what he or she wants or another has. Greed didn't just start today. We have cases of greed right from the Bible, example being the case of Gehazi, the servant of Naaman. Today, in our society, we see cases of greed everywhere, among civilians, among the people on the street, those we live with, even our leaders are not left out. They all exhibit the features of greed and steal everything to the detriment of others.

Knowing what Greed is all about, what do you think is the difference between ambition and greed?

• Greed is excessive desire for something, it has to do with wanting or demanding for not just one but for all, a greedy person is excessively insatiable but ambition is yearning to become something positive in future. It is the desire for success.

• While greed is negative, ambition is positive. An ambitious person is always ready to work and climb the ladder of success steadily to be what he wants to be in future like a pilot, the president of a country, a doctor etc.

• One can be ambitious but not greedy but most greedy people are not even ambitious. They are ever ready to take shortcut and take over what they did not work for. An ambitious person works hard to reach the Apex of his career and make a difference but a greedy person is ready to bribe his way or take shortcut and then steal money and other things and also make his bank account fat.

• While a greedy person aims at enriching himself physically, financially, materially and otherwise, an ambitious person invests his time and money to get what he wants like education, certification and even skills.

• A greedy person is shortsighted, he only cares about the present, but an ambitious person is long sighted and make long term investment, thinks about the future and also puts the need of others into consideration.

Can greed ever be a positive force, or is it always destructive?

To me, Greed can never be positive, but rather it is negative and will later swallow up or consume the person, but some believe that greed can be positive because it makes people aim for better lives, but what makes it destructive is that the better life the greedy person aims for, the person isn't ready to work for it. A greedy person cannot be satisfied. He does not know when or where to stop demanding for more. He doesn't care who he steps on in the aim to get more, a greedy person doesn't care if others have at all, infact the conscience of a greedy person will sooner or later die. Greed is destructive because it creeps slowly on the person and suddenly destroys him by making people afraid of him, the person will be stigmatized and avoided because he doesn't care who gets hurt for him to get what he wants. A greedy person is an impatient person who doesn't care about the future, but prefers getting everything now. A greedy person will increase the price of things abysmally, will deliver bad or spoilt goods to people, will steal public funds and lie against others. A greedy person is obsessive about material wealth. Greed makes people not to care about how their actions is affecting others example selling adulterated drinks which is detrimental to health.

How does greed affect relationships and trust among people?

Greed doesn't have any positive result on relationships. In short, if a set of greedy people become friends, they will still try to cheat one another. A greedy person will later on be avoided by family and friends. People will try to avoid disclosing their success to a greedy person knowing that he might start coveting and may even end up killing to take over. A greedy person isn't trusted because he might sell what belongs to the family or the community just to enrich himself. People avoid a greedy person because everything is about him, he loses respect among people because of the consequences of his greed.

Do you think greed is a natural human instinct, or is it something that is learned?

Just like sin isn't learnt but comes naturally, I believe greed comes naturally. There is this natural tendency in man to ask for more, and not be satisfied in the little he has. Almost every human is selfish in one way or the other, that is another form of greed. It can be seen in children, asking for more even when they have more than enough. Greed can be seen in different genders, different sectors too. From the common man on the street or the masses to the leaders of the country. It can even be seen in churches. Greed is seen amongst workers who want increment but prefer working less, the citizens of a country will use an increment in the price of fuel to put an incredible tags on food items, going as far as giving less quality for more money. Greed can even be seen in our law courts and our justice system. https://www.pexels.com/ Greed is not learned, it is natural.

Have you ever witnessed or experienced the negative effects of greed in your own life?

I have experienced greed at different times. I have been owed by my employer at different times even when we have made enough money for salaries to be paid. I have witnessed a family member swindle his blood relative, I have witnessed a brother planning with another to kidnap the mother so that the rich brother can pay ransom. I have also been a victim of greed which I learnt from. I needed a small phone and I had limited cash, so I decided to purchase from the roadside, unfortunately on reaching home, I realized the phone battery was weak and the phone bad, I lost the money. I also saw a comment on Instagram during COVID period, where people were chosen to get a phone. I was told the phone is in Benin so I should pay delivery fee. Immediately I paid, I was blocked. And so I learnt my lesson.

Greed is something that has destroyed a whole lot of youth and even people today and that is why we must actually escape from it before it is too late. Greed is not good and should not be desired
