My Neighborhood

Neighborhood is where someone resides, the area surrounding someone's home, it might be rural or urban. It might also have the features of both rural and urban area. My neighbourhood is Anua offot in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria.

Economic situation and Activities in my neighborhood

The economic situation in my neighborhood is not too good. Gone are the days when everything was cheap and affordable, but currently, everything is on a high price die to the increase in dollars. This has made life very difficult for people. Garri, that is processed cassava that used to be 3 cups 100 now goes for a cup at the same price. A plate of food that used to be as cheap as 300 naira, that is equivalent to 1 steemit depending on the influx of the market is now 400. A satchet of water that used to go for 10 naira is now 30 naira. There is always less activity in my neighborhood in the morning because some people are late risers while others are early. People go about their different activities, sole open their businesses as early as 7am while others open from 9. While many hurry to work, students to school, some youths go to the field very early to play ball. Others are always seen going to fetch water in the morning before the sun sets, but everyone goes around trying to survive in one way or the other. My neighborhood is mostly peaceful tho we have few moments where people live in fear due to some things.

Weather condition and their effect

The weather condition in my area depends on the time of the year. At the beginning of the year, we had harmattan where the weather was extremely cold until about two weeks ago, when the weather changed. Presently, the weather is extremely harsh and hot, at 33 degree Celsius. The heat is almost unbearable making it uncomfortable to sleep at night without fan. Unfortunately, power holding company responsible for supplying electricity isnt helping matters. The effect of this is dehydration, heat and rashes. We do not have at most 20 hours of electricity in my neighborhood, it can be at most 5 hours a day, that's how bad it is. There is this joke that the gate of hell has been opened.

We do not have much traffic in my area since it's not totally urban, there is more tricycles abd motorbikes in the afternoon and evening than morning and night.

Workplace Activities

The activities that goes on in the workplace depends on the type of work that is going on there. One can see activities like buying and selling, sewing, teaching if it's a school, if it's a hair stylist salon, washing of hair, braiding, blow-drying etc.

Business/Entrepreneurial Activities

There are many entrepreneurial activities in my neighborhood because there are no jobs by the government so most people establish business to survive. We have businesses like grinding shop where things like cassava, maize, beans are grinded. We have tailoring shops, supermarkets, motorcycle riding for commercial purposes, tricycles etc. Everyone aims at surviving in the harsh economy.

Ceremonies

Ceremonies in my community are done depending on the day of the week. For example, traditional marriage is never done on a Monday except it's holiday period, same as burial and wedding. Traditional marriage isn't started in the morning as early as 8 but from 11am. In my community, Sunday is meant for worship so many people flock to church on Sundays. If an important or rich person is doing marriage, some roads might even be blocked on that day so people don't have any other choice than to go take another way. Thank you for reading and getting to know about my neighborhood. I invite @unyime 23, @nsisong2022 to take part in this contest.

You've really taken a close watch of your environment. The weather condition, lack of jobs and focus on entrepreneurial skills, the days of ceremonies etc.

Well done!

Thank you, I appreciate
