STEPS IN DRAWING A CHAMELEON

I started with the branch of the tree in which the chameleon is sitting on

Then I drew an oval shape for the body and a circle for the head

My next step was to draw the long tail and I rounded it in a spiral form.

I then drew the tail and joined it to the body, before working on the body to give it it's scales.

My final step was colouring it and I used red, green and blue and my chameleon is ready.

About chameleon

A chameleon is a lizard that can change its colour to match the colours around it. The name chameleon means earth lion and comes from the Greek words "chamar" (on the ground) and "Leon" (lion).

Have you ever seen one?

No, I have never seen a chameleon before, I only see it in books, I see pictures of it tho if I see it physically, I don't know if I will quickly identify it as a chameleon because there are other creatures with different names in the class of reptiles. I believe they can be found inside the forest and not close to where humans live, maybe that is why I'm unable to see it, but despite the fact that I have never seen, I know one quality of it which is changing colours.

What is it like and what does it do to save itself from danger?

The chameleons are in the class of reptiles. The chameleons are famous for their ability to change colour, for camouflage, but that is not the only reason they change colour. They change colour to attract mates, in response to temperature, light, and their emotional state. They also change colour to protect themselves from danger. The colour of their skin helps them blend in with their habitats. They hang out in trees that are usually green.

Their life span is 12 years. They mostly live in the rain forest, deserts of Africa, savannah and even mountains . The eyes of chameleon can move in two different directions at once, giving them a view of their surroundings. When a chameleon wants to eat, it shoots it's tongue from its mouth very fast to catch whatever it wants to eat.

Chameleons are diurnal and primarily insectivorous. They rock back and forth between each step taken. Chameleons are not social animals and are very shy. When two animals have visual contact, they can change colours within seconds. They can wrap their tail around tree branches while climbing, and unlike other lizards, their tail cannot be broken off and regrown.

Can a chameleon change to any colour?

A chameleon cannot change to just any colour due to danger or it's environment. There are only specific colours a chameleon can change to. For example, if a chameleon sees a purple and violet colour, it will not turn purple and violet spots. They don't look at what they are sitting on and deliberately decide to match it. Instead, each chameleon species has a group of patterns and colours that it is able to display. Chameleons have four layers of skin: the outer, protective layer, called the epidermis, the chromatophore layer, which contains yellow and red pigments, the melanophore layer which has the dark pigment melanin and can create brown and black colours or reflect blue, and the nether layer, which only reflects white. The blending of the different layers creates the colours and patterns that we see.

Does the chameleon benefits humans?

Yes, the fact is, every creature created by God benefits humans in one way or the other.

Mediterranean chameleons help control populations of arthropods, some of which can be agricultural pests. This, they potentially serve a role of natural pest control.

They help in balancing the ecosystem.

Chameleons are not dangerous, they do not attack unless they are attacked first and they can bite, their bite might be painful tho it cannot kill neither is their bite poisonous.

I hope you have learnt something new today.

I invite @imadear, @manuelhooks, @arjinarahman to join in this creative contest.
