It's me again @comrade01 from Abia state and I am here with another interesting post.
Today, I want to join the iteach contest organized by sir @fredquantum in the steem4nigeria community. In this contest, entries that are made should educate the reader in one way or the other.
As most of you know, I am a medical practitioner and this is another great way to give another health education. Health is wealth and for today, I will like to talk about a disease condition called "Malaria."

Yes, know that malaria is very common among the Africans, mainly Nigerians and as such, little or no attention is given to this disease condition but after this health education, you'll see the need to look into the disease condition more than the way you do.

The signs and symptoms of malaria
Complications of malaria
prevention of malaria
and treatment of malaria.
So, on this note, let's begin with the health education shall we?
Malaria is a deadly disease condition caused by the transfer of a microorganism from a female anopheles mosquito to a human individual through a bite.
It is gotten when a female anopheles mosquito bite it's victim and then suck their blood. During the sucking, a microorganism known scientifically as plasmodium escapes from the mosquito and find its way into the blood stream of the victim. From there, it migrates to the liver where it settles down and multiplies (give birth to other plasmodiums). After the multiplication, it travels to the entire body thereby causing signs and symptoms like:

Fever
Rigor
loss of appetite
weakness
Dizziness in some cases
Anaemia in extreme cases
Nausea
vomiting
muscle aches
mental confusion (in extreme cases)
ultimately death.
These are the signs and symptoms exhibited by a person infected with the malaria parasite.
If malaria is left untreated for sometime, it can lead to;
Anaemia
psychosis
cerebral malaria
death e.t.c
There are more to the complications of malaria but these are the ones I'd like to talk about.
Yes, malaria can lead to cerebral malaria (when the malaria migrates to the brain) and as such, the victim will start showing psychotic symptoms.
Anaemia is a complication of malaria because the parasite readily destroys the blood cells and as such, the victim will loose blood cells rapidly.

As said above, malaria is one of the leading causes of death and the depressing thing here is that, malaria kills its victim slowly and painfully.

However, there are ways to prevent malaria. As said, prevention is better than cure.
To prevent malaria, the following should be done:
leave in a favourable environment
clean stagnant waters to eradicate the habitat of mosquitoes
eat healthy foods to improve your immunity
use nets to close windows and doors to avoid the entrance of mosquitoes into the house
sleep under mosquito nets
use insecticides e.t.c

Treatment of malaria should be done under the close observation of the doctor. I would not advice anyone to go into self medication because self medication is very risky and as such, I will not name any drug for malaria but I will advice everyone to visit the doctor when they start seeing any of the above mentioned signs and symptoms. seek medical aid if you notice the slightest change in your body's physiology.

You have written well comrade01 not advising people not to be involved in self medication is ideal. Unfortunately 50% of people around us especially in Nigeria are involved in self medication. Why do I say so? Here in Nigeria, malaria is the commonest diseases and it affect a greater population, some of this people affected by malaria do not have the means to go through the procedure of seeking for medical attention through a specialist. What they do is go over the counter and het drugs for themselves while some uses herbs to treat themselves.

Yes, self medication isn't advised because the dosage Mr A will require in the treatment of malaria is different from that of Mr B irrespective of the fact that they have the same age.. calculations are done by health workers to determine the exact cause of disease and to also determine the dosage for a particular individual.
Normally, in Nigeria, accessing health care is very stressful except it is an emergency. Even when it is an emergency, attimes before the medical team will come and review, the patient would have started questioning why they came to the hospital.
On this note, I think one of the problems in Nigeria that makes people go into self medication is the hospital. I am a medical practitioner and have also been a patient so I can say this with defensive points.
Here are my points for saying this: in Nigeria (looking at Federal Medical Center Umuahia Abia state), the staffs there are supposed to have been retired and be paid pension but prolly due to the fact that they can't afford a living if they retire, they tend to either lie about their age or use connection to remain in tbag position and more.

Thank you for sharing. The process of malaria occurs in two stages known as life cycle. One occurs in the guts of the female anopheles mosquito while another stage occurs in humans. The topic of malaria infection is quite vast as we could consume a thousand words and yet we are not done with the whole process/ explanation. But the key point is .. we need to prevent malaria.
