Introduction

Good morning everybody and hope your Sunday is going well. After successfully participating in @simonnwigwe contest yesterday, I'm so so glad and happy to do same today on @josepha's contest today.

First, when I saw the topic of this contest, I felt like this is something I would love to talk about. I immediately got motivated to talk about this and to share all about human rights in my country, Nigeria.

Human rights are supposed to be the basic rights and freedom that every citizen in a country should enjoy, regardless of age and status, simply by virtue of being human. These are rights that are constitutionally accepted and known widely to be strictly respected.

In my country, just like every other country, there are different ways and levels in which human rights are being respected or ignored. But then, the protection of human rights is essential to ensure that every citizen is able to live a life of dignity and respect, free from discrimination and oppression.

Now with this statement above, it is very clear that the government of the country should be the sole citizen to employ valid steps that will protect and promote human rights, and to prevent and address human rights violations when they occur.

Now let's look deep into the contest post.

1. How is the level of human rights in your place?

In my country Nigeria, there are lots of problems and issues when it comes to respecting citizens rights. We as a country has made some progress in protecting and promoting human rights, but there are also significant challenges that remains a big problem to us.

The level of human rights in my country is very low. It's can only be observed and respected when you're an influential or well-to-do citizen in the country. In fact, sometimes these rights are completely taken away from you and you're left with nothing just life to breath.

In terms of legal rights, Nigerian citizens are entitled to a range of rights and protections under the country's constitution, including the right to freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly, as well as the right to a fair trial and protection from arbitrary arrest and detention.

However, in practice, there have been concerns about the extent to which these rights are being limited, and most of us the citizens are experiencing violations of our rights, including harassment and intimidation by security bodies, restrictions on freedom of expression, and discrimination based on ethnicity, religion, or other factors.

As much as I hate to say this, my country has failed in protected her citizens rights. We get oppressed and badly treated most times.

2. Do you think you are currently enjoying your fundamental human rights as a citizen of your country? Tell us how you have been enjoying it.

Enjoying rights in my country comes occasionally. Its something you don't always enjoy. As it is right now, I'm in the middle of enjoying my rights and not enjoying my rights. Mostly, my rights gets limited and I'm being stopped from enjoying these rights as a born citizen.

So for this, I can say that as a citizen of Nigeria, my rights are being limited and I don't enjoy them the way I should. I am being limited of my rights.

3. Do you have any such story where your rights were trampled? It doesn't have to be about you. Just tell us a case where someone had their rights trampled on by someone who should have upheld them.

Before I go further into relating to you all about some instances where I was been denied my rights as a citizen in my country, I will like to talk about some areas in which human right has been ignored in my country.

  • Civil and political rights: There have been lots of instances where freedom of expression are being limited and ignored, as well as violence and intimidation of journalists, activists, and opposition figures. This is something that happens steady in my country.

  • Police brutality: We all know the popular #EndSARS protest in Nigeria. That was a widespread story of police brutality and extrajudicial killings by the Nigerian police, particularly by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). This alone is a clear scenereo of how youths in this country suffers violation of rights.

  • Gender-based violence: Women and girls in Nigeria face high levels of gender-based violence, including rape, domestic violence, and forced marriage. This is something that shouldn't be done in a civilized country like Nigeria. Women should be taken good care of, they build the nation. Their rights should be respected and their opinions put into deep considerations.

Now going back to how my rights in particular has been violated.
As a Nigerian, I have suffered lots of rights violations.

Firstly, I'm a college student. I'm supposed to spend five years before graduating, but unfortunately, I'm in my seventh year now in the university. In fact, to cut the long story short, students here face significant challenges in accessing education, healthcare, and basic services such as clean water and electricity.

The federal government and ASUU always using their power to suppress we the poor students. They send their children outside the country to study then stay back to slow down the process of education here all in the name of looking for money from the federal government.

Secondly, I can vividly remember a time where I went to do my JAMB registration. JAMB is an acronym for Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board. It's an exam for high school graduates who are seeking to further their education in any of the universities within the country.

During that time, I was in front of the queue to collect my original exams centre slip but I was asked to stay back. These police men and other securities handling the candidates outside almost made a scene there with me. Before you're been allowed to enter the ICT centre to collect the slip, it's either they know you or you came with someone to speak for you. Otherwise, they will just allow those they know and let you stay outside to wait.

I felt like my right were tampered with. Most of us couldn't get the slip that day. We had to go back home and come back the next day.

Thirdly but not the last, I have been stopped from writing my final high school exams just because I had no money to pay for cooperation fee. We were much that day. Why would a teacher stop his students from taking exams just because they couldn't pay cooperation money? An exam which you've already paid for. This bad!!! I felt bad.... We all felt bad.

I'll stop here for today. I have lots of this to write and talk about but this will do.... Now let's look below to some subtopics I've added.

4. How can human right in a country be guided and protected in our world today?

Human rights in a country can be guided and well protected by a combination of legal bodies, social norms, and institutional mechanisms.
A country's constitution can provide the foundation for human rights protection by just outlining some basic rights and freedoms, and establishing an enforceable law to make sure that they're being guided. In order to protect the rights of her citizens, it is important that the constitution start up an institutional body that makes sure that human rights are being respected.

Additionally, educating the citizens about their rights and how to exercise it is very very important. Raising an awareness to enlighten the citizens and to make it clear on the security bodies handling different corners of the society is very good.

conclusion

In conclusion, protecting every citizen's rights is essential for creating a fair and just society. Citizens should be respected not only because they are wealthy or because they are from the same village as you, but because they deserve it. Nigeria is truly a diverse country, so the issue of rights and rights protection is always on the rise. Let's try to make our countrymen happy and make the place a good place for all. Thank you.

And for the invites, I'm inviting @maxer27 @julievk @marcelo25 and @gormogon to participate with me.

Thank you sir.

This country is so full of corruption especially in the education sector. I totally agree with you on this. To make this country better these issues have to be fixed.
