Children tend to resemble their parents, grandparents or other relatives more than they do other people. The same is true of the offspring of every animal and plant. In a group of individuals of any species variation in apparent, each individual differs from all the other in some ways.

Offspring inherit characteristics from their parents via the sex cell. The hereditary material of the cell know as (DNA) passes on the information which ensures that a mating between two goats, say, produce a zygote which develop into a goat and not, for example, a dog.

Definition Of Hereditary And Variation

Hereditary
The handling on of characteristics from one generation to the next.

Variation
The difference between offspring and their parents and account for the uniqueness of individuals produced by sexual reproduction.

The segregation of chromosomes which takes place during meiosis, together with the random process of crossing over in which material is exchanged between chromatids in the bivalent, gives rise to variation.

Variation In Populations
All living things including human being vary in many small ways, so that no two individuals are ever exactly alike. The member of a species share common features such as the general 'plan' and structure of their bodies.

• Size

• Colour of the eyes

• Shape

• Structure

• Hair

• Behavior together with acquired characteristics like scars or a knowledge of language.

Examples of Hereditary
Certain features of organism are inherited but others are not. Hereditary features are the general plan of the body, and variation within the plan such as the eye, weight and hair colour. While the Non- hereditary features include the scars, knowledge and all other acquired characteristics. These characteristics are not inherited because they cause no alteration whatsoever in the hereditary information contained in an organism's chromosomes. It is this information that determines the shape and form of the next generation.
