in Steem4Nigeria3 days ago

Traditions can be so fascinating, but then it sometimes can also be very downright and disgusting. In Ikono, my local government area here in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, we have some traditions that might make you cringe. yes I mean it and I'll be diving into the topic with you all together!

Do You Believe in All the Traditions of Your Country?

No I don't actually. I do not believe in all! While definitely they're some traditions which are very beautiful and teach us valuable lessons about our own culture, others at same expense can be quite strange or even troubling go human kind. It’s therefore very important to think critically about what we are to accept as tradition. Although Some customs may not make sense or probably may hurt people, and it’s very okay to question them to any limit.

Can you mention at most 3 Disgusting traditions of your country that you forbid and why?

The Human Sacrifice: In most areas I. my local government, there have been traditions where many engagers believe that sacrificing of human can bring in good luck or prosperity. This is very horrifying and they should never be tolerated. Every human life is much valuable, and we should at least cherish it instead of harming others.

Body Disfigurement: In my place, there are customs that definitely involve disfiguring the bodies of some certain individuals as a rite of passage. This i see it leading to lifelong pain and of course suffering. Our dear bodies are our homes, and therefore we should take care of them, not harm them.

Animal Cruelty: Some other traditions
do involve cruel practices against the animals, like in using them for entertainment in a dangerous ways. The Animals also deserve kindness and respect, just like we the humans does.

Are traditions in your country still held in high esteem, or are they fading away?

It's very breathtaking that some traditions are fading away, but many are till date still held in high esteem. For example, the Ekpo festival which celebrates the spirits of the ancestors and is a time for my community to come together and mostly happen on the cultural day. Ikoong here is another of the tradition that still held in high esteem by my village people but myself don't appreciate nor tolerate this because it's use to bully and restrict movement as well it deprived humans the right to freedom of movement. These above mentioned traditions remind us of our roots though and the values we cherish as a community.

What are those occasions that demand traditions to be performed before they become legal?

In ikono, we have Certain occasions that strictly demand that traditions be performed properly before they become legal. For example, during a wedding ceremony (Traditional Marriage), specific necessary rituals must be first completed to bless the union abundantly.

  • Similarly to when someone passes away, there are indeed customs that honor their life and guide their spirit. These very traditions help to connect us more with our past and provide closure.

Share your favorite country's tradition of all time.

One among my most adore and favorite traditions is the New Yam Festival. This very festival moment helps to celebrates the first harvest of the year, and it’s always a time for dancing, feasting, and definitely giving thanks.
The Families gather, and everyone will shares their food. It’ always a joyful occasion that helps brings us the community together and help reminds us of the importance of gratitude and of course sharing.

"In conclusion,"

While most of our traditions can be disgusting, though others hold significant value to human existence. It’s then essential to discuss and really reflect on our customs to keep all the beautiful ones alive while letting go of the so harmful ones. Let’s us the Steemians celebrate the good and work towards a better understanding of our culture always!

I'm inviting @bossj23, @elliany and @toflex to this discussion. let's make it a lesson to discovery.

            Thank You
