Preamble

What's good fellow Steemians globally? Here comes an opportunity for me to share with you all about the type of governance, how election is conducted in my country, my views and much more. This so timely to me now that my country Nigeria is preparing for their general elections. Of course it makes sense to

talk about yam while harvesting yam"
An adage by Doosuur Najime 2003

Let's roll it.

Type of governance in my country and how effective i think it has been in running the country's affairs

Nigeria since becoming a Republic nation as far back as 1963 experienced different type of governance from monarchical type of governance to acephalous, to parliamentary, then military and now Federal (democratic, presidential) type of governance. It's governed by the executives.

Being a federal republic government, all powers are vested and been exercised by the executive president who's the head of state/government.
The governance type in my country is well structured but lack proportionate, satisfactory, effectiveness .

The failure of good governance in Nigeria is as a result of these elected executive representatives who views vital challenges as a norm. These include election rigging, high level of insecurity, bribe and corruption and even armed forces harassment on their citizens to mention but few .

There's no doubt that Nigeria has often ranked low in most key areas, ranging from political stability, effectiveness of government, terrorism and violence handling, appropriate control of corruption, rule of law and much more.

These incompetence leaders who find their ways into power did it through bribing majority of electorates who have been corrupted by past leaders who went through same process. Other methods include making empty promises during political campaigns, voter intimidation, and some through violence.

Solution

The type of governance that can enhance their Voters education and also the capability of their leaders is what Nigeria needs.

From one system of governance since becoming a republic nation , yet still experiencing much challenges, making the average Nigerian to think all hope is lost. I might be wrong anyway but I'm with an opinion that all system will work. Defending my opinion I'll say, if citizen who with their power elect leaders into offices places our nation Nigeria ahead of political parties, favouritism, regardless of place of birth .

Election methods employed in my country and how effective they are. My participation in election

Election methods here are certain rules and materials that directs how elections are carried out. The rules covers all voting aspects such as who's worthy to be voted and who should vote, how to do the voting, how ballots are marked/counted and how the votes being casted translate to election outcome and many more. These hasn't been different in Nigeria either.

While the electoral materials are those which are provided by the electoral body for efficient conduct of elections.

Here in Nigeria, the electoral body responsible for conducting elections is called Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Theu releases electoral timetable which States the dates and method as well mood of election when due.

How it's been done in my country

On the election day (s), all voters are first accredited before going ahead to vote their for their preferred choice with the ballot papers issued to them by INEC.

There is always a register in each polling unit carrying names and details of registered voters in that polling unit.
Then, after the votes are all casted, the Presiding Officer (PO) counts the votes and allocates them all to each party while the party agents and voters watch before the records are taken to the LOCAL GOVERNMENT INEC office.

So basically the mood of voting is closed ballots voting. This hasn't been effective at all. In many if not majority of pulling units, they end up manipulating the results.

Solution..?

The issue of results manipulation during election isn't new to all, though illegal this is why the Nigerian government in their forthcoming general elections wishes to transmit results electronically. This means that, as soon as votes are casted , the results will be sent right from the polling unit for transparency.

Ever participated in elections?

I've never taken part in elections this forthcoming election however will be my first time participating. I've gotten my private voter registration ID ready which much convincings on the need to exercise my franchise.

My suggested method of electing leaders to power

The system of electing leaders in to offices through the above stated method is of no harm and isn't bad. This method is being used my many countries in the world for long.

The fact that results manipulation cases is being recorded isn't really a red signal about this method but the leaders in charge of electoral offices. Electoral body as we all should know ought to be an independent Body.

If issues of electoral manipulating is the complain then the body should be regulated instead of changing the mood of voting.

Would you prefer other forms of governance different from the one you have already and why?

It has become necessary for me to see every need of seeking for change of governance in Nigeria. I've never participated in the previous election not because I was yet to attain the age of voting neither the previous government was without blemishes but because it wasn't as critical as now. Very important step I took that worth mentioning is idea of getting my PVC ID.

Nigerians have been hungry for good governance since independence despite changing from from different system to another. Cases of other countries being ruled for years by a particular person isn't new to us, it's because they have been doing well which is why they people keep revoting them into office. This is so different in Nigeria, the incompetency of leaders who we vote into office, governing us contrary to our wishes is what keeps us seeking for a change of governance for better.

I personally think there's nothing wrong with the system of governance in my country Nigeria, but there's everything wrong with the governors.

Conclusion

My believe; the earlier the electoral body and if possible electoral act is amended, the earlier the electorates start voting for competency and record the better we start experiencing good governance. It's a collective responsibility. May Nigeria succeed.

I'll like to invite @prolee, @ruthjoe and @saater to participate

It's great to read through your entry today, @barnsbarnabie. The fact is that the present governance type in Nigeria is actually good, only that we have been deprived of good leadership in the past, or let me say that the same sets of candidates come over and over again to take up the seat of power.

That said, I'm glad you are ready for the upcoming exercise of the general elections by getting your PVC. Yeah! Rigging has been part of the system for some time, I can't imagine a situation in this state about 4 years ago when voting from certain polling units was declared inconclusive.

Why? They realized the incumbent party would lose if the result was announced, the election day for those regions was rescheduled only to take the government by force, luring people to vote for a party and if you are not willing then stay away because it was deadly.

That prompted massive turnouts in the recent one conducted as people elected their choice of government. You highlighted that the present governance type is great if they can get rid of rigging but how do you think that can be achieved?

You wrote quite well on this and I wish you good luck.

There could be no better polishing words than these . You've said it all.
Just hoping for the best we're looking for to come sooner than expected

You're being very honest here sir. At least you aggred with me that senofbtjese challenges aren't only in my country. The solution is what we're still after for better governance. My best wishes be with you always

You have said a lor my friend, it is quite obvious that the system is not working just the way it was created for. We now see the issue of dictatorship in the democratic government.

Yes Nigeria is known for her democratic leadership but the opposite is what we see today, selfish leaders that are just after their belly and that of their families and neglecting those citizens that strived so hard to put them in power. I really hope the system will be made better just as you have written. You have done well friend.

Just after their selfish belly that's very true brother, and it's quite sad. May the good governance Nigerians desire happens to them in this forthcoming general elections

Es muy buena información la que nos compartes sobre la democracia de tu país y esperemos que logres participar en el próximo proceso electoral.

Yes yes ! Surely I will participate. I'm eager to do that. Just patiently waiting till when the elections start so I can exercise my franchise as a responsible citizen of my country.
Thank you so much for visiting my post. I appreciate your time big

You really did justice to the questions and from my observation over your write-up, it seems you've worked with INEC before because of how you explained how voting is being done in the country.

Manipulation of votes in polling stations is a big problem in African countries that are said to be under a democratic governance system. In my country, elections are seemingly rigged as well, to the point that we already know the winning candidate even before the election day. It is so so terrible! The system of governance isn't the problem though, rather the execution and manipulation makes the governance look more like a monarch system in the shadows.
