What is Vision Therapy?
Vision therapy is a holistic treatment for blindness that involves eye exercises and visual training. It is used to treat many ophthalmological conditions including amblyopia, strabismus, convergence insufficiency, and others.
The first step in vision therapy is the assessment of the patient's eyesight followed by an examination of their visual system to identify any possible problems with their vision. The examination may include a visual acuity test, eye coordination and tracking tests, and other tests.
For example, a visual acuity test can be administered by holding an object close to the patient's face so that they are unable to see it clearly. The examiner will then ask them if they can identify what is in front of them. If not, the test is considered failed. If a person is unable to individually identify one of these items in the test group, then they are considered "legally blind": 2.8% of the population falls within this category.
The following are exercises that adults can do to help improve their eyesight and prevent vision problems...
Eye exercises for adults:
Staring at a fixed point for 5 seconds, then moving your head to the right and staring at a different fixed point. Repeat this process 10 times.
Look up, down, left and right while blinking often. This will exercise the muscles in the eye socket and help keep them healthy.
Close one eye and try to identify an object in front of you with your other open eye by looking back and forth between the object and a distant light source 10 times.
Hold something close to your face with both hands, then close one eye at a time while looking through it. Repeat this process 10 times with each eye closed. NB: This process is best done with a timer. Place your hand over one eye and close the other eye. Now, start the timer and spend 15 seconds looking at your hand. After 15 seconds, switch eyes and repeat this process for 10 rounds.
Vision Therapy is a set of treatment and rehabilitation techniques that are used to help people who have problems with their eyesight. It has been used to help children with headaches, migraines and other conditions.
Visualization Therapy is a technique where a person is encouraged to control their stress, anxiety or pain by imagining what they would like the experience to be.
This can be done either through visualizing in the mind's eye or using a specific device such as an exercise bike with various resistance levels. A specific example of this is the "sprint interval training" method, in which an athlete runs or cycles at a maximum speed for a short period of time and then slow to recover.
This has been shown to improve endurance performance, but a drawback is that it can cause tachycardia, which would only serve to reduce performance.
There are a number of eye exercises for children that can help fix their eyesight issues. The exercises should be done under the supervision of an ophthalmologist or optometrist.
Some of the best eye exercises for children are:
1) Find the letters of the alphabet on a piece of paper. Place a book about an inch in front of your nose and hold it for 10 seconds. Then, look at the letters and try to read them out loud.
2) Try to close your eyes from left to right in one eye at a time for 10 seconds each:
3) Try to cross your eyes for 10 seconds:
4) Try to touch your nose with your tongue for 10 seconds:
5) Close one eye while looking straight ahead:
6) Look up and down, left and right, in quick succession.
7) Cover both eyes at the same time.
8) Open your eyes as widely as you can (the wider the better).
Conclusion:
The importance of eye health in preventing blindness cannot be overstated. There are many ways that people can take care of their eyesight: by getting regular eye exams, wearing sunglasses, staying away from bright lights and using artificial tears to keep their eyes moist. Blindness is not just the loss of sight; it is also a very complex chronic disease that can affect nearly every organ in the body.
