The Importance of having a Good Name
Greetings everyone and hope this meets us well. Glad to be a part of this contest today.
When we talk of the value and importance of names. What make a name valuable or important is that our names are a symbol of our identity, our name points to who we were, who we presently are and what we will be. Our names are a deep part of our existence and culture.
I believe that a persons name and reputation is more valuable than material wealth because the scripture says that a good name is better to be chosen that great riches, than silver and gold. Our reputation will always precede us meaning our reputation may outlive us while our wealth may not.
A lot of people care so much about making money at all cost to the detriment of their reputation. Our reputation is what we are known for and what people see us as. Someone can have money today but has a bad reputation. People will always make reference to the man as a rich but wicked man. The reputation has spoilt the achievements.
If people know you as someone who is dishonest, wicked , fraudulent etc or as one who is honest, kind and easy going, these good or bad reputation will always go before you whether who have material resources not.
There are some character qualities that will contribute to one building a good name; they include things like;
Being sincere. If you want to build a good reputation, you must be a sincere person. An honest man who is not out to swindle people and take advantage of their ignorance.
You must be one who is truthful at all times. Most people call back white and white black. They never stand on the side of truth.
You mustn’t be a bribe taker as brine closes the eyes to doing justice. You must be someone who always wants to see justice served.
A man of good repute must not be a lazy person, a busy body or a back bitter. You must be honest and hard working.
Having a good name can impact personal and professional relationships too because people want to personally associate themselves with people with the right reputation. No one wants trouble and most people will always stay out of trouble or people of questionable reputation.
No one would want to refer someone who doesn’t have a good reputation for a business or an employment or be a shortee for someone who will put them into trouble. People will always want to have business dealings with people whom they can trust and this all boils down to reputation.
A good name can be inherited and passed down through generations ofcourse. I’ve seen cases where people cite examples of families and approve people from marrying from them because of the reputation that the fore fathers built over time.
People refer some families as good and some as bad and would warn you to stay away from them or go ahead and have something to do with them. This is because of the reputation they have built over time.
A fathers reputation can open a door for the child or close a door depending on what they father is known for. Imagine walking up to someone and telling them you are dangote’s son, that’s an automatic open door. He’s reputation in business precedes him. Hence a good name or reputation can be passed down through generations.
