The words “skills” and “talents” are synonymous in a kind of way, however, these two words have different meanings in the English language.

Both are nouns.

Skills refer to abilities or techniques that are learned or acquired while talents are abilities or skills that come naturally to a person. By this, it means that talent is innate i.e. an inborn ability present from birth or a skill someone was born with.

Skills are learned and acquired
Several young people are encouraged to earn a skill, as it gives them an edge when applying for jobs and life generally. Common skills people acquire include soft skills like written and verbal communication, time management, etc. and hard skills like the ability to use different hardware and software tools, drive, cook, etc.

Talents are natural abilities
If you consider it to be God's gift to a person, then you are not wrong. Many people are born with the ability to do different things effortlessly. Steemit, for instance, has numerous talented people. Some in art like @paulyoung, storytellers like @yhudy, and creative communicators like @patjewell.

If singing comes easy for you or you can play a particular sport or instrument better even without training, then you can consider yourself to be a 21st-century talent.

Skill vs Talent: Which is preferable?

Hard work beats talent EVERY TIME. Talent can make climbing the social ladder easier. However, when the owner of a talent fails to put it to good use, that talent will fade with time. Hence, I prefer skill. To be considered skilled, you need to practice, learn from mistakes and have adequate experience.

Skills can be graded
It requires you to keep working hard to stay at the top of the game.

You slack, you flop.

You work, you win.

My talent

Everyone needs a good skill to leverage, myself included. My skills and talents are mostly art inclined even though I did science at school.

First, I'm a talented communicator. However, my excellent written and verbal communication skills are not limited to writing articles on Steemit alone. I also use it to help people battling with life challenges live a better life. I speak to them, profer solutions to their problems and watch them manage their problems better.

People frequently ask whether I am a psychologist or therapist while others suggest that I consider studying any of these at school. But I feel like this is God's gift to me for the world.

Every human needs a skill, talent or a mix of both. Identifying these strengths will help you stay relevant to society. You can choose to earn from them or use them for social good like myself.
