Workplace5: What steps are you taking to improve your workplace? Or what would you advise those who want to improve?
Hello friends, it's feels good to be here, anyways it's my first time been here and am loving the initiative here already by @alexmove, who has equally put a a contest which myself and many others have found really interesting.
I wouldn't want to make my Introduction very lengthy...so at this point I would like to go straight into the subject matter.
I believe it's expedient to start on this note. We must first understand what a workplace is before we can start talking about how to improve it.
In a lay man's definition, a workplace is a place where you carry out productive activities that in turn bring you some form of remuneration. You can decide to call this income or profit, you won't actually be wrong.
Just, like every other responsible man and woman out there, I also have a workplace and I will be taking about it shortly in the next section of this write up, just scroll down a little...smiles..
Here we are! Smiles.... Welcome to Dee Farm. Anyways I hope you ain't disappointed...lols. Maybe you were hoping to see me in an office well dressed in a nice shirt and tie, probably with a large table containing a desktop and a heap of files and documents...you know that white collar kind of appearance...smiles.
Anyways I work in a farm and guess what? Am super proud to be a farmer. I know at this point you've got questions to ask me. Questions like what kind of farming, what exactly do you do...well well, am gonna respond to all of that almost immediately.
Well am into both livestock and crop framing but currently our focus is on livestock. We keep birds. Chicken (Broilers) to be precise. We rear them and them dispose them when they are due for consumption.
Am sorry our farm doesn't look like a sophisticated one,smiles... but you know, we can always start small and grow over time into what we've really pictured for the future, so bear with us...winks
We are also into fishery. Remember I told you our focus is currently on livestock. Yea! So we have fish ponds where we nurture fish up to maturity stage and then sell off to those interested. The type of fish we nurture is called catfish! It one of the most patronized specie of fish in Nigeria.
Lastly we keep goats. It a cool business too that requires patience if you must profit from it. It been a whole lot trying to nurture these ones though as you need to give them maximum care and attention since the method we have adopted is the semi-intensive style of nurturing. Here is a picture of our goats feeding on edible plant I got for them from the bush.
Lastly we have local fowls flocking around the farms, these ones are not really given much attention as they can always fend for themselves. Nevertheless, we feed them and look out for them as well
Here is a very big question that I would answer practically and experencially. Well Every workplace need constant and steady improvement to be on top of their game.
In the course of our previous activity, I mean keeping the Broilers, we lost most of them before their maturity stage, we discovered that the chicken cage needed to be worked on to reduce the invasion of disease.
We resorted first to flooring the base and then disinfecting the whole cage using potent chemicals before bringing in the next batch of chicken. This is still being worked upon just as seen in the picture below.
We also carried out maintenance activities on the fish pond as well, spraying chemical on the weed growing around the pond and mending every loopholes around the pond where fish can escape through.
Well if you're into what I do, you would need to update and upgrade your knowledge steadily and regularly. You also need to pay attention to your livestock to get the best from it. Some of the losses we have experienced in the past were because of our little carelessness and oversights which cost us dearly.
I would have love to go on and on discussing about my work place but will wrap it just here so I don't bore you with it. I believe constant improvement in whatever we have found our hands doing is key. It will help establish the business and make the workplace condusive. Thanks for your time.
Regards
