"Steemit Engagement Challenge Season 8 Week 2: My Traditional Medicine"
Steem greetings fellow steemitians, and special greetings from the motherland-Cameroon to the administrators of the Steemit health community.
It is week 2 of the challenge and it is often said that “health is wealth”. Indeed, without good health, we are catch-up in the nets of poverty. However, traditional medicine some may say it’s a cheaper means to cure or fight against some diseases, but another school of thought do not believe in traditional medicine because it is poorly prepared without respecting hygiene standards.
Notwithstanding, I believed in traditional medicine because they are natural without artificial preservatives. Below, I will be sharing my thoughts based on the guiding questions about traditional medicine.
What are the names of traditional medicines in your country that you know?
Talking about traditional medicines in Cameroon, there are several different types of traditional medicine. These might just be herbs used to treat different illnesses or finished products of herbs produced by herbalists for the treatment of different illnesses.
Growing up as a child, I always preferred traditional herbs because they heal faster than conventional medicine. This seems my belief at that time and it was working for me.
One of the famous traditional medicine is “200 diseases cure” (African Panacea). Strangely, a single traditional medicine can cure 200 different illnesses 😉😉. I guess the first time I heard of the name, I was also surprised until when I started using it. This medicine is a combination of different herbs.
Blackjack (bidens pilosa is the scientific name) is another common herb with antioxidants, and inflammatory components used for the treatment of malaria. The plant can grind up and use it to heal wounds.
Lemon grass is also a natural plant used to cure fever in adults and children. It can be combined with lemon and pineapple peelings and boiled to drink as tea which helps to cure fever, flu etc.
King grass with the scientific name (Penisetum purpureum), is another magic plant used for the treatment of different illnesses. One of the common use in case of stomach ache. Cut 3 stems of king grass and chew and you will witness the magic in the grass.
Please share with us a traditional medicine recipe that you know, then write down the steps for making it.
I will be sharing the flu, fever traditional medicine recipe I prepared today because I am suffering from flu and fever.
The ingredients used were as follows:
- 1 Lemon
- A handful of Lemon grass
- Pineapple peelings (medium size pineapple)
- 2tablespoon Honey
Steps to Prepare the medicine.
Pineapple peelings.
- Take your pineapple, wash it, and then use a knife to peel off the peelings. You can then use the pineapple for a smoothie or eat it as it is.

- Harvest your lemon grass and wash it.
All the ingredients put together.
- Put the pineapple peelings in a pot, add the lemon grass and cut the lemon and add 1 litre of water to the pot.
- Allow it to boil for about 10 minutes. You can drink it hot as tea and you might want to add sweetener as I did add natural honey.
Note that it all depends on the quantity you want to prepare, then the number of ingredients used might as well increase.
What are the uses (benefits) of these traditional medicines?
- The first benefit is that it cures fever.
- It boosts my immune system.
- The use of pineapple and lemon contains vitamin C which helps to prevent the flu.
- It is also good for those who want to lose weight.
- It helps to improve digestion and is anti-inflammatory.
Are there any negative effects from it? If so, please state anything!
Every medicine has good and bad side effects, especially when consumed overdosed.
With this traditional medicine, one side effect that it has is that it can cause diarrhoea.
It can also cause abortion if taken by pregnant women. In case you are pregnant, do not take this medicine.
