Geckos are a type of reptile
Geckos are a type of reptile belonging to the Gekkonidae family, with more than 1,500 species known worldwide. In Indonesia, geckos are known by the local name "tokek" or "gecko", and they are often found in various habitats ranging from tropical forests to residential areas.
The characteristics of geckos are their small bodies, tails that are often longer than their bodies, and scaly skin. Gecko sizes vary, with some species being only a few centimeters long, while others can reach 40 cm. Geckos have the ability to stick to various surfaces, including walls and ceilings, thanks to special structures on their feet.
Geckos are known for their distinctive loud sounds, especially at night. This sound, which often sounds like "tock, tock, tock", is part of their communication ritual, both to mark territory and to attract mates. Apart from sound, geckos can also produce vibrations through their bodies to communicate with fellow geckos.
Gecko diets vary depending on the species, but generally they eat insects, worms and other small invertebrates. Some gecko species, such as the giant gecko (Gekko gecko), are known to have large appetites and can eat larger animals.
Geckos have an important ecosystem role as insect predators, helping to control pest
populations. In some areas, geckos are also considered a symbol of wealth and are often kept as pets.
However, some gecko species are threatened due to habitat loss and poaching for the pet trade. Conservation efforts are needed to maintain ecosystem balance and protect gecko species from extinction.
