The Tuha Indrapuri Mosque is one of the important sites that marks the history of Aceh. Besides being historic, this ancient mosque is also a silent witness to the entry of Islamic civilization in Aceh.
Formerly this mosque building was a temple founded by the Hindu kingdom of Aceh. Then it was destroyed after the entry and development of the teachings of Islam in the Veranda of Mecca.
This mosque was founded in 1618 by Sultan Iskandar Muda who was the Sultan of the Kingdom of Aceh at that time. There is another history which states that the Indrapuri Mosque was built in 1607-1636 AD.
Indrapuri Mosque is located in Pasar Indrapuri Village, Indrapuri District, Aceh Besar District, Aceh. The location of the mosque is not far from the Banda Aceh-Medan highway, approximately 150 meters entering the Indrapuri market junction.
The entire building is of wooden construction with some traditional Arabic carvings. This overlapping-roofed mosque is built on a four-layered step wall made of limestone mixed with clay.
The reconstruction of the mosque building, which is located in an area of 33,875 square meters, has four levels. The four levels of this roof symbolize the level of Islamic knowledge, starting from the Shari'a, tarekat, essence and makrifat.
During the construction of the mosque, Sultan Iskandar Muda installed 36 pillars along with the roof supports. From the pole, you can still see various forms of carvings typical of the ancient kingdom.
Besides, the shape of the roof of this mosque resembles a pyramid with four roofs from the bottom to the top. The pyramid-shaped roof is the hallmark of traditional mosques in Aceh.
A silent witness to history in Aceh
In 10 AD, the Indrapuri region was part of the Indrapurwa Hindu Kingdom. Other literature mentions that apart from establishing a kingdom, Hindus also built a temple which was named Indrapuri, which means Kuta Ratu.
Then in the 12th century AD, the Hindu Kingdom of Lamuri went to war with pirate troops from China. In the end the war was won by the Lamuri Kingdom with the help of Meurah Johan, the Prince of Linga (Gayo) who later made the Lamuri Kingdom a Muslim.
This area was once functioned as a fortress during the Portuguese and Dutch occupation of Aceh. This happened when the Royal Palace of Aceh Darussalam in Banda Aceh was successfully controlled by the Dutch in the second military aggression in 1874.
Here, Sultan Alaidin Muhammad Daud Syah (1884-1903) was crowned the King of Aceh. At that time, this ancient mosque became the center of the Aceh Sultanate government as well as the defense base of the troops.
Colonial soldiers had taken control of this mosque, but the Acehnese troops managed to retake it through fierce fighting. Indrapuri Mosque is again a center of worship as well as the development of religious knowledge
The oldest mosque in Southeast Asia
The Tuha Indrapuri Mosque, apart from being the oldest in the archipelago, is also called one of the oldest in Southeast Asia. This is based on the fact that Islam first entered the archipelago through Aceh, namely through the Perlak Kingdom, then the Samudera Pasai Kingdom.
"It is one of the oldest mosques in Southeast Asia, we know that Islam first entered the archipelago in Aceh, of course the oldest mosque is also here," said Husaini Ibrahim, Aceh historian from Syiah Kuala University, quoted from Tagar.
He also did not deny that the forerunner of this mosque originated from the influence of the Hindu kingdom at that time. Then, the subjugation of the kingdoms of Lamuri and Indrapurwa by the Kingdom of Aceh Darussalam under the rule of Sultan Ali Mughayat Syah.
Then confiscate all the assets belonging to the kingdom. After that, there were pre-Islamic buildings that were converted to Islam, including the Indrapuri mosque.
"Above the forerunner of Indrapuri, there was influence there to be converted to Islam, so there was a process of Islamization when the Hindu kingdom was defeated," said Husaini who is also the author of a book entitled 'The Beginning of Islam Entering Aceh'.
Therefore, according to him, it is not surprising that with the development of Islam in the archipelago, other mosques have grown that resemble the style of buildings such as the Indrapuri mosque.
This mosque does not only function as a place of worship. But also as a place for deliberation and determination of the king in the era of the Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam.
Okay... Then after we traveled a few tens of meters from the historical site, and we all went home also took time to make a pilgrimage for a while at one of the places located in the village of Siem, Darussalam district, Aceh Besar district, in that village there is a grave of a cleric namely tgk krueng kalee, and some information that I received from khadam ( panjaga) , the grave has been visited by several pilgrims from neighboring countries such as malaysia and thailand
According to history, after I asked the Khadam of the grave, Abu Krueng Kalee or his real name, Abu Muhammad Ismail, he is the grandfather of Abu Muhammad Hasan Klee, one of the founders of the oldest Islamic boarding school in Aceh named Darul Insan, which is also close to the village, Abu Krueng. Kalee lived during the time of Abu Tanoeh Abee, Abu Krung Kalee was also one of the most respected clerics, okay, the people of Aceh, according to information, he is also descended from Persia,
Maybe these are the results of our trip and I apologize for not being able to present a complete history, because we have not found concrete historical records related to the life history of abu krueng kalee...
