Discovery of statue by divers in Italian lake

Divers discovered ancient clay statues at the bottom of a lake in Italy. This statue in the shape of a woman was found submerged at the underwater archaeological site Gran Carro di Bolsena di Aiola.

This statue is thought to date from the 9th or 10th century BC. According to a statement from the Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, this feminine-looking, palm-sized statue looks new and bears the fingerprints of its maker. Traces of a piece of cloth were also found under the statue's chest, indicating that it was likely that the statue was once clothed. Cultural heritage experts say this statue is similar to grave goods that are often found, but this statue was found on a site that was once a residential area. This statue may also have been used for rituals.

The Underwater Archaeological Services team was credited with the discovery. This statue was brought to the surface thanks to the Italian Cultural Property Restoration team in collaboration with government divers.

In 2020, experts discovered a mound of earth beneath the rock, where the wood and ceramics originate. These findings led experts to conclude that Aiola existed in the stilt house period and was an integral part of the village in the early Iron Age. The additional discovery of coins and pots from the era of Constantine proves that there were still inhabitants at the site until the end of the Roman Empire, this discovery was the first experience they had encountered throughout history, they were very happy about the discovery.
