🛺 Kampot to Hà Tiên 🛣️ With A Future God 🧘‍♂️ Part 1 🎬

in Road Trips4 years ago

Once upon a time at our restaurant in Cambodia, a customer offered me some money to take him to the Vietnam border in my Bajaj RE for a visa run.

I decided to make a family adventure out of it, mostly because the family had never been to Vietnam, and Cambodians can enter without a prior visa.

🤝 An Offer We Couldn't Refuse 🙏

As we had the only affordable vegan restaurant in all of Kampot, Cambodia, we often hosted a wide range of budget travelers, from Ethiopian soldiers to Swedish hipsters and more.

One particular customer, unfamiliar with the way to Hà Tiên, Vietnam, asked us if we could run him to the border to renew his Cambodian tourist visa on the weekend.

He let us know he was in a financial bind and couldn't pay us for the journey, but that he would document the trip with his high-quality camera and give us the pictures as a form of gratitude.

We sensed he was genuine, agreed to his proposition, and began packing the Bajaj for a roadtrip, picnic and general fun-filled family adventure.

🚛 On The Road 🛣️

Even though I had lived in Kampot for about 3 years at the time, I myself hadn't yet had a chance to explore the area around the Vietnam border, so I was quite excited.

We were well acquainted with the road to Vietnam, as we used to frequent a beach about halfway to the Vietnam border. The cute little well-behaved dog is Bella, a travel mate that he picked up in Thailand before coming to Cambodia.

Never shy for adventure, we sat off on the ever-dangerous Cambodian highways with a plan to have @Sreypov and the @KidSisters cross over the border briefly to obtain their first stamp in their newly acquired Cambodian passports.

Picnic 🍽️ Selfie 🤳 & Graffiti Detour 🖌️

A convenient stopover on the way to Vietnam is the little village of Seh Saa (White Horse), about 30 minutes outside Kampot. There is shaded plot of abandoned land there right next to the highway, and it's complete with graffiti.

The graffiti provided some nice photo opportunities, and we enjoyed some homemade bean curd sandwiches, our vegan answer to the famous Vietnamese Bahn Mi Sandwich.

We would've already posted our bean curd sandwich recipe, but the price of dried bean curd is so expensive in Suriname that we've only purchased it once. The @KidSisters saw me making this post and begged us to make these sandwiches again.

A picnic in Cambodia is a perfect opportunity for everyone to pop a squat, the most Southeast Asian thing ever.

🛺 On The Road Again 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧

Feeling well-fed and readyfor more adventure, we got got back on the road again to make a few more convenient detours before finally heading towards the Vietnam border.

This adventure is fit for a 2 or 3 part series, so I will finish it here for now, and eventually I will explain what I mean when I say "future god," but for now I will let you know it involves a psychotic break from reality.
