Beauty of Creativity : The Bee Flies (Bombyliidae) |10% beneficiary to @beautycreativity
Good evening all friends #BeautyOfCreativity (BOC).
Tonight I will display a beautiful bee flies, this insect I found in a garden bush in my area, the color is stunning so I was interested to take a picture of it.
Ligyra tantalus is a species of insect in the Bombyliidae family, commonly known as bee flies. It has an orange and brown thorax and a black abdomen with a white ring and four spots on it, although the rearmost two spots can be joined together in some specimens. The wings are purplish-black and swept back from the body when at rest.
They are among the many flies that imitate bees, bumblebees in this case, and this is how they got both their common and their scientific name. Like some bumblebees they are brown and furry and they make a buzzing sound when flying. But unlike them they have only two wings instead of four, large eyes, skinny long legs and very short antennae, not at all like those of bees.
It is found in Asia in areas such as China (mainland) and Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines (Palawan), Taiwan, and Thailand and also in Australia.
The Bombyliidae are a family of flies. Their common name are bee flies or humbleflies. Adults generally feed on nectar and pollen, some being important pollinators. Larvae generally are parasitoids of other insects.
