Paper Wasp Feeds on Grass Panicles

in Beauty of Creativity3 years ago

This is a paper wasp captured by my phone camera in a meadow. A habit that the paper wasp has is that it likes flower nectar. But this wasp turns out to not only feed on flower nectar but also panicles found on grass stems.

From the behavior of these wasps, I assume the panicles on grass also produce nectar. Because I also often see ladybirds feeding on grass panicles.

Paper wasps are wasps in the genus Polistes, belonging to the family Vespidae. Some species live in small colonies, while others tend to live solitary. From experience, I've seen several times where there is a nest that is only inhabited by 2-3 paper wasps.
