Robber Fly: A Little Predatory Insect

in Beauty of Creativity3 years ago

I intentionally spotted this little robber fly nicely standing on the vegetation plant which instantly invited me to take shots. I approached it and started to take pictures while being there. It was there for a moment and I got to use this opportunity to capture them. Robber fly is well known as a predatory insect that is capable of catching prey while flying, that is why it is used to be seen standing on the twig, waiting for the prey to come. To paralyze the prey, it injects a fluid into its victims that breaks down the muscle tissue. The robber fly varies in characteristic habitat that mostly inhabits the swamp area.

The Asilidae are the robber fly family, also called assassin flies. They are powerfully built, bristly flies with a short, stout proboscis enclosing the sharp, sucking hypopharynx. The name "robber flies" reflects their notoriously aggressive predatory habits; they feed mainly or exclusively on other insects and as a rule, they wait in ambush and catch their prey in flight.source
