Insect on the Spot: Antlion (Myrmeleon)
I found this antlion was calm under laundry rope, I happened to notice this insect after taking carpenter bee and since it was so quite up there, I decided to take some macro photos. The antlion is active during the nighttime hours, it feeds on ants and some are themselves prey for the dune cricket Schizodactylus inexspectatus. Larvae can be active during the day and night. Scarlet lacewings are white with black strip body, providing camouflage in areas of dense vegetation. As an under-appreciated group of beneficial insects, antlions are like lady beetles in that they are natural predators of many types of soft-bodied insects and insect eggs. Antlion, (family Myrmeleontidae), any of a group of insects (order Neuroptera) that are named for the predatory nature of the larva, which trap ants and other small insects in pits dug into the ground. The most interesting part of this lacewing is that the colors and the transparent wings. All I needed to do was to manage to get a couple of shots from close range before it's really disappeared from my sight.
