Black Skipper on Lantana | 10% Beneficiary to shy-fox
Well, at least it wasn't raining that afternoon as I gingerly made my way to the wood. Of course, I had to hike above the river and start strolling alongside the little stream. There where I found this Black Skipper on a Lantana shrub! There are lots of varieties and I'm not sure of the specifics of my catch. This typical skipper is most often found perching in a prominent, sunny position, usually on a flower or large leaf, just like the butterflies do.
Skipper is generally considered by many to be the same group between butterflies and moths. They have smooth, knobbed/hooked antennae like butterflies; some fold their wings vertically over their bodies (kind of intermediate between butterflies and moths) and some fold them flat over their bodies like moths. It belongs to the family Hesperiidae, in the order Lepidoptera.
Skippers are considered an intermediate form between butterflies and moths. The head and small, stout body of the adult tend to resemble those of a moth.source
