The punishment consisted mostly of the public disgrace the condemned person had to endure which made life in the community very difficult. The punished person was exposed to the insults and violence of passers-by, which was not without danger. Throwing objects at the condemned and beating were common. In Lübeck, however, it was prohibited to throw solid objects at the person in the pillory.
