Hello dear Recreative friends, it feels good to be among you and sharing once again with you today. Today is the day that a great harvest have occurred and I ask that you please stay here and complete your reading.

It's the day for the big harvest

Yes, today, 2022-04-11, we finally went to the farm to harvest our casava plant that we had planted during the planting season. We all (@ngoenyi, @benton3, @wizzyboy3, @madilyn02) went there today to harvest except @fortwis09 who went to school for her extra-curriculum lesson to prepare her for the upcoming external exams.
The farm that we went to today is where we mainly planted the cassava plant. Do you know casava?

Cassava

Cassava is a common plant in Nigeria and they are even known as the highest producers of this plant.
There are many uses of cassava in Nigeria. It can be used to make many types of food, casava flour, Garri, Tapioca, Fufu, etc.
It can also serve as feed for most animals in the farm.

Today we harvested so many of them and the land yielded so much good tubers of them. The harvesting process of the cassava involves the following:

  • Uprooting
  • Peeling
  • Washing
  • Processing to desired food
Our uprooting process

We got there early by 8 am and there we viewed the farm and saw that the plants were very ripe do harvest.
We began to uproot the cassava to get them out from the soil. Thankfully it rained the previous day and so the soil was still soft and it made it easy for us to uproot the plants.
IMG_20220411_082951_833.jpg

We will drag the stem until the root comes out from the ground. The plants yielded so well that we got many large tubers from the soil.

IMG_20220411_091504_204.jpg

We uprooted so many of them and it still remained a very large portion to be covered. But since we were a bit tired, we decided to rest for a while and the sun was also coming out and becoming hot and the sky was shining brilliantly.

IMG_20220411_135452_934.jpg

We were able to gather all the ones we uprooted and kept them together in a place. See them below:

IMG_20220411_103053_517.jpg

We were able to find shelter under the plants and trees and we enjoyed the cool breeze too.
It didn't take long till the time for rest ended and we began the next process, do you remember what I said the next step is? Well keep reading.

Our Peeling process

After we were done with uprooting the best we could, it became time for us to start the peeling process. The peeling is done with small knives and we came prepared with it.
Everyone took their own knife and started to peel.

IMG_20220411_123046_699.jpgIMG_20220411_104227_404.jpg

The sun wasn't much of a challenge because there were plants and trees protecting us from the blazing sun.
We were sure to peel everything to the last and to keep them ready fo the next process.

Our Washing process

After peeling and arranging them, we took them to the nearby water tap to take water for washing.
The images below shows you how the cassava looks before washing it.

IMG_20220411_144238_055.jpgIMG_20220411_144234_147.jpg

So we got the water into a basin and ashed the whole cassava. After that we packed them all in bags.

IMG_20220411_144116_665.jpgIMG_20220411_154513_931.jpg

After this step, what to do next is determined by the type of food you want to make with the cassava. For us, we wanted to process the cassava into a local for called Garri.

What is Garri?

Garri is the most common food in Nigeria thy is made from processed cassava. It is often eaten with soup, but most times people soak it in water to drink as food and they add some things like sugar, peanuts and milk to it.

IMG_20220411_182545_297.jpg

The most popular way of eating the Garri is by eating it with soup. The below image shows the Garri and soup ready for consumption.

In the above image, you see that the Garri is now in a molded form, yes, that is how it is made when you want to eat it with soup and it is achieved by mixing the Garri with hot water and that makes it easier to swallow with the soup.

So you now know what the Garri is, it's time to go back to our cassava and take the next step. Since it is for Garri, we will take it directly to the mill for grinding.

Going to the mill for grinding

It was already getting late it was actually 4 pm already. We already stayed for full working hours. So we packed the whole cassava into the car and headed to the local mill for grinding.
The sun was now blazing so harshly and the sky became more and more brilliant.

IMG_20220411_155522_382.jpg

I went home for a while with @wizzyboy3 and give him lunch, also my other cousin.
I then returned to the mill to continue the work with the others. They already started to grind it there and there were also many others who came to grind their own Cassava.

IMG_20220411_173600_950.jpg The cassava after grinding

Yes, the above picture is how the cassava will look after grinding it. The next step is to pack them in bags and the man who owns the mill will take care of extracting the water while we pay him for his services. We only packed them in bags and kept there for him.

IMG_20220411_175631_186.jpg

Once the water is extracted and the cassava is dry, we will then fry it to make the Garri. The man said that it will be ready tomorrow and we will come to take it towards evening. So we will get to work again when it is back and this time we will be frying the Garri for food at home.

I found the plant below beside the mill and it was beautiful to me. I took photos of it, I'll find the name out later....

🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱

That was a lot of work,we came home feeling exhausted. But it is worth the effort, we will be having enough of this food at home and also the opportunity to share with others.

Nice! I'm happy that you read to this point, thank you so much. I did my best to.present this post and I hope you liked it.

wow, how cool that you guys can harvest cassava.

Here in Argentina it is called cassava, but it is not common; so if we want it, we have to import it from Brazil which is the closest tropical country.

The culture of you people from Africa is very similar to that of Brazil and Venezuela.

In Brazil they also process the cassava and turn it into flour, it is called "FARIÑHA" which is a type of flour to accompany soups, stews and other foods.

Excellent harvest you had, you are a very industrious girl.

Keep on producing great quality content @madilyn02

Hello sister, thank you very much. It's true that the whole process of the cassava harvest is quite exhausting and leaves us tired after doing it.
You also work very hard there and I admire you so much.

Thank you for your good wishes. And have a great day today 😊
