Meditating on Verses: JOB 14:1-5
INTRODUCTION
The Bible is a sacred book which is hold dearly by a lot of people. Just like the Bible says in the book of 2 Timothy 3:16 : All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. The Bible is used to teach, rebuke and also correct our ways. The stories contained in the scriptures are very very important and could be used as a manual for today's life.
The book of Job which is in the old testament of the Holy Bible is known as one of the oldest Scriptures in the Bible. It contains the story of a Rich man Job who was faithful but was struck by misery. This book of the Bible is eye opening and is a form of knowledge to whoever reads it.
I love the story of Job and how God doubled his blessings once more but for this post, I will be looking at his travails in Job 14:1-5

[1] “Mortals, born of woman, are of few days and full of trouble. [2] They spring up like flowers and wither away; like fleeting shadows, they do not endure. [3] Do you fix your eye on them? Will you bring them before you for judgment? [4] Who can bring what is pure from the impure? No one! [5] A person’s days are determined; you have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed.
Job who by now was struck with disaster and misery, tried to explain to his friends that he was innocent of any allegations.
He cried out about the frailty of the human life. He starts by highlighting that God created man's life to be short and full of troubles. Too few days but too many troubles. He lamented how man's troubles were more than his day's on earth.
He couldn't help but compare the life of a man to that of a flower. A flower blooms for only a short period. Everyone enjoys it's fragrance and beauty but it doesn't take long before the flower withers. The writer shows that human life can be likened to the flower. Humans are born into trouble, such beauty of creature withers and dies so easily.
He didn't stop there, he compared the human life to the shadow of the clouds. The shadow of the clouds doesn't take time to disappear. The human life also disappear so easily and most times forgotten easily.
The third verse sheds more light on who Job was conversing with... He was talking to his maker (God), it appears he wasn't happy that God was still going to judge them even with the troubles man is facing. He asked why God will even bother judging a man who is impure and living a turbulent life. He pointed out that there was nothing important about the life of man that even needs judgement to start with.
Job was sad and showed his unhappiness in how short life is but full of troubles and an awaiting judgement from God. He was tired of his misery and wanted it to end.
▶️ What practical application can you extract from the verses read? |
---|
These verses and a practical image of how our life is. I live my life knowing fully well that it is short and full of troubles. But like the verses showed, it compare us to the flowers and I love being positive even in turbulent times. I have to make sure that I live a beautiful life just like that flower. Make sure that people around me are affected positively just like the flowers.
This verse also helped when I lost my grandmother, she died with pain. And I wanted to understand why God would allow her to be sick for 5 years and still die. If she was going to die, why didn't it happen immediately but she had to suffer before dying. The book of Job helped to comfort me. I read that the life of man is full of misery and short. Like the shadow of the clouds it disappears but the people we show kindness to and enjoy moments with are what makes life worth living.
▶️ Do you like the poetic language used by the author of Job? Do you find it easy to memorize or paraphrase what you read? |
---|
I love the poetic language used by the author of job especially how it points and compares things. I love reading the book of Job and proverbs because it is full of wisdom and gives meaning to life.
I find it very easy to memorize verses in the book of Job unlike some other books of the Bible.
Job 14 talks about:
The frailty of man
The uncertainty of life
The sinful nature of Man
This chapter is one that is recommended for further reading and study.

Thanks for your kind words of encouragement, I really do appreciate. And a big thanks for holding this contest, it gives room for more bible study.
