Bravo @steemhealthcare for coming up with this #3 Contest which centers on Coronavirus: the outbreak and pandemic that has totally changed the perception of our lives and survival. It has brought about the new normal.

Here is my contribution on the Daily Contest #3: Tell about the conditions of Covid-19 in your Country.

I am @nneoma08. I am a Nigerian. Nigeria is in Western part of Africa, the Great Continent.

This COVID 19 period has been the most trying period of my life and I guess same for a lot of people all over the world. May we never see a time like this in the history of humanity. From The horrible news and assumptions that were everywhere to the devastating emotional trauma, it was worse than all nations of the world been at war with each other.

We were glued to different TV channels for news and latest updates until it got so scary that we decided to shut down on all of them because the more you listened to the news, the more you feared for your life and those of your love ones. There were different ideologies from different sources on the social media platforms and predictions and prophecies about the end of world. What a period!

So according to all the news sources, The Coronavirus 2019 also called Covid 19 because it was diagnosed in 2019 (CORONA VIRUS DISEASE 2019) started in Wuhan China towards the end of the year 2019. It’s the most fatal disease I have ever heard of. It comes with symptoms such as cough, breath shortness, fever, and in severe cases breathing difficulties and pneumonia. It was noted that people could spread it through sneezing and coughing which were normal to our former way of life, hence, anyone that coughs or sneezes around us are suspects. Families were separated from their love ones for two weeks for isolation, testing and quarantines and sadly a whole lot of them never returned to their families and worse of all, their remains were never handed over to their families for fear of further spread of the disease.

While some great nations were struggling and suffering the impact of Covid 19, most African countries like Nigeria were at peace until the first case of an Italian National who came into the country was reported in February 2020 and the disease has continued to spread till today, according to reports. We called the reports and the government information rumors because we have not been able to see or hear of a particular person that has suffered or died from the diseases.
Politics is what we termed them all because our government has always politicized almost everything. Yes, we have lost faith and hope in them especially this present government. This is a story for another day.
Our government had put a lot of precautionary measures in place to curtail the spread of the disease. The measures are;

  1. The Lockdown. This was the height of it all. The Essence was to reduce the spread of the disease but resultant effect was devastating. Businesses, Schools, Airports, Churches, Banks, Markets were closed down except for health workers at first for two weeks, then another two weeks, one month and later, the alternating of the days for work and staying at home. It was terrible. People managed the first two weeks but into the second two weeks, all hell was let loose because there was no provisions made for the masses prior and into the lock down. People were hungry. The angry youths went on rampage, stealing, maiming people, rapping women and girls and robbing people of the little they had at gun points and with any weapon they could find.

It was so bad that all Men and Youths in our environs had to keep watch in turns every night to scare these thieves off.
We later heard that the Federal Government made provisions for palliatives but the politicians took over the items they never got to majority of the masses until the youths started breaking in and looting the food items.

Well, it is what it is!
A lot of kind-hearted philanthropists made donations of both food and cash gifts to the masses too.

  2. There was temperature checks
and buckets for washing of hands and application of hand alcohol based sanitizer

and even at bus stops.

  1. We must all put on facial masks before stepping out of our homes.

  2. We must apply social distancing from one another to about 2m in the public places.

  3. We must sneeze or cough into our flexed elbows or disposable towels.

  4. The washing of our hands every 20 or 30 minutes was advised for at least 20 seconds or at least till you finish singing the happy birthday song. This one really got me because my children were at the tap every minute to wash their hands with soap and water. They will wash till a bar of soap is almost exhausted.
This is one good thing that the Covid 19 has taught us - maintaining a hygiene which is more than proper hygiene.
A majority of the people have become very health conscious which is an amazing development because there’s a saying in Our country that dirts doesn’t kill a black man and many of us bragged with this.

  5. We were advised to reduce touching our eyes and nose with our hands which was a major point of contacting the disease because the disease can be contacted by touching surfaces or infected persons.

  6. There were curfews at different times and all social gatherings were restricted and was done online for the mandatory ones like schools and churches. Every worker worked from home.
Another merit of Covid 19 to Nigeria (development of technology)

  7. We were advised to stay at home if sick, call the Covid 19 toll free phone numbers or report to the nearest testing center for examination and testing.
This particular measure also had its setbacks because at a point when people reported to hospitals whether with cough or cold, the doctors termed it Covid 19 saying that it was the instruction from the government. Every death was named Covid 19 death.

We then decided to take care of ourselves and our families by going the African way, most doctors advised this too. We resorted to herbs and heat. We would go to the market, purchase large quantities of garlic, ginger, turmeric and lemon stored them in our kitchens. I blend them, make into drinks and store in my fridge for everyone to drink. We would come out between 10am and 11am to enjoy the morning sun which was a measure source of Vitamin D. Every morning we boiled water, covered ourselves with towels and did some steaming.
I buy bottles of Vitamin C that we take on daily basis.

We also try to take more fruits than before. The essence of all these is to boost our immunity against the disease.
We survived it, Glory be to God.

My children now go to school with their face shields

and I also got them wrist bands that I fill with hand sanitizer. Their teachers help them apply on their palms as at when due.

I don’t ever forget my nose mask

even though there’s no more implementation of precautionary measures.

  1. The government has purchased first doze of the COVAX Vaccine

since March this year for the masses to be vaccinated against the disease but a majority of the masses have vowed not to take the Vaccine because of the rumors spreading about the adverse effects of the Vaccine on humanity and for the fact the Nigerian government abandoned her people during their trying times.
