TELL US WHAT HEALTHY FOOD OR DRINK YOU LIKE AND RECIPES
Before going to recipe let's see the health benefits of "Polos curry".
- Jackfruit is a potassium rich food and potassium always lower the blood pressure.
- Jackfruit has antioxidant properties which can act against the free radicals. This may help to reduce the chronic diseases like cancers.
- It is a good source of vitamin C which essential for the collagen production. Collagen is important to maintain skin and bones.
- Some substances of jackfruit have healing property.
- Jackfruit reduce the LDL cholesterol level and raise the HDL cholesterol level. This may help to reduce blood pressure and decrease the risk of heart attacks.
- Jackfruit is rich in fiber that ease the digestion and bowel movements.
The above are just a few of benefits. In addition to that, In my country "Polos curry" is very famous among the pregnant women and moms who have new born babies. Because our elders believe that "Polos curry" has properties to increase breast milk supply/ lactation. It is a traditionally passed down concept and I don't know whether it scientifically proven or not.
So... let's cook "Polos curry".
Ingredients
- Medium sized jackfruit
- 1 medium sized onion
- 3 pieces of "goraka" (gamboge)
- Curry leaves
- Thick coconut milk
- Salt to taste
For spicy mixture - Dried red chilli
- Garlic
- Cumin seeds
- Fennel seeds
- Cinnamon
- Coriander
- Cardamom
- Black pepper
Method
1). Clean and cut the jackfruit.
- You have to cut it carefully as this fruit have the sticky bird-lime.
- First cut the green colour outer shell of the baby jackfruit.
- Then remove the sticky bird-lime using paper.
- Then separate the fleshy part from hard stem which can see in the middle of the fruit.
- Then cut the fruit part into medium sized cubes.
- Transfer cubes into water to avoid discoloration.
2). Make the spicy mixture.
- Broil the red chilli, garlic, black pepper, cumin seeds, fennel seeds, cinnamon, coriander, cardamom in low heat.
- Put them on a grinding stone and grind well.
3). Slice the onions and curry leaves.
4). Take a pot and transfer the spicy mixture, sliced onions, curry leaves, "gorakaa" and salt to it.
5). Mix them well.
6). Transfer the jackfruit cubes to it (After draining water properly) and mix well.
7). Add thick coconut milk and cook on medium heat for around 1 hour.
After cooking
Here is the best part... Now you can enjoy it.
This curry can serve with rice, bread and hoppers. You will like the taste of this curry, especially if you are vegetarian.
