I. MALUNGGAY

It is known with it's name as "moringa oleifera" "horseradish tree" "drumstick tree" or "ben oil tree". But whatever it is, I grew up knowing it's common name as "malunggay".

Since I was young, I grew up with my parents took care of a farm, and because of that, a lot of vegetables to harvest for the meal. But this malunggay, we always prepare this every meal, like three times a day, with no other ingredients, just a pure malunggay leaves soup. Though sometimes there's another viand or dish if having some luck hehe, but malunggay were never out of the table until now. I just remember how my parents taught us to eat this kind of vegetables, since it has a little bit of bitter taste, and as a kid, sometimes we didn't like to eat it. But they told us that we have to eat this, because it has a lot of nutrients that could benefit in our health. They even telling stories if ever we won't eat the malunggay soup, ahahaha. But then, as I grew up, without knowing that my parents telling the truth, I also learned it from school how malunggay could benefit a lot to our health.

Nutrients

Moringa leaves are an excellent source of many vitamins and minerals. The leaves are the most nutritious part of the plant, being a significant source of B vitamins, vitamin C, provitamin A as beta-carotene, vitamin K, manganese, and protein. When compared with common foods particularly high in certain nutrients per 100 g fresh weight, cooked moringa leaves are considerable sources of these same nutrients. It also contains calcium and phosphorous, which help keep bones healthy and strong. Along with its anti-inflammatory properties moringa extract might help to treat conditions such as arthritis and may also heal damaged bones.

The immature seed pods, called "drumsticks", are commonly prepared by parboiling, and cooked in a curry until soft. The seed pods/fruits, even when cooked by boiling, remain high in vitamin C, (which may be degraded variably by cooking), and are also a good source of dietary fiber, potassium, magnesium, and manganese.

It's mature seeds yield 38–40% edible oil called ben oil from its high concentration of behenic acid. The refined oil is clear and odorless, and resists rancidity. The seed cake remaining after oil extraction may be used as a fertilizer or as a flocculent to purify water. Moringa seed oil also has potential for use as a biofuel.

Actually, I've been experiencing gastritis/ gastric pain, been to endoscopy due to peptic ulcer, and after that my mother used to grind malunggay leaves to let me intake the extracted juice from it. I couldn't take it's taste, but I had to.
