Steem greetings from the motherland-Cameroon to all animal lovers on this amazing platform. The Engagement Challenge Season 11, Week 5 is here and I'm excited to share content regarding the topic of discussion.

For this week's discussion, the topic focuses on “Steem, Say No to Animal Abuse". Follow me as I share my thoughts about the topic following the guiding questions below. I hope you find pleasure in reading through my ideas.

What does the expression "Don't disturb our habitat" mean?

Most often humans go closer to some animals especially when they are sleeping to maybe get a snapshot. In the process, disturbing them from having proper rest.

According to my understanding, the expression warrants humans not to interfere with or disrupt animals for their selfish interests. Take for instance a situation whereby a master dog is having a good sleep and they interrupt the sleep just to take pictures.

The expression also means that humans should not put animals in uncomfortable scenarios. For instance, not giving them enough space to survive.

Animal abuse is common in my area, especially with cats and dogs because the government has not paid attention to these habitats.

It is a common scenario for a master to punish his dog or cat to death. Some masters can starve their pets, and torture them till they flee away from home and seek refuge in the bushes.

I have witnessed a situation where a man has a dog he loves so much but the wife did not like pets. The Man travelled out of town, and the wife tortured the dog till the dog ran away from home and started stealing food from the neighbours to survive. One day, the dog stole meat from a neighbour’s house and they caught the dog one day and killed the dog and dumped it in a nearby bush.

Notwithstanding, other habitats are protected by the government as they regard them as “endangered species”. These habitats included monkeys, lions, elephants, etc. They are highly protected from poachers.

Is there a real form of the legal approach taken by your country's government that regulates human actions towards animals?

As I earlier said, only habitats considered endangered species are highly protected by regulations. If caught abusing the endangered species, you will be arrested and charged in court. The reason why the government trained forest guards and placed them in the forests around town.

Concerning pets like dogs and cats, there are no regulations put in place by the government restricting humans from torturing these animals. People treat dogs and cats any how they deem fit.

Some people even go to the extent of hunting cats and dogs to sell to some individuals consuming them as meat. There are even restaurants in town specialising in cooking cat and dog meats. In such restaurants, coded language is spoken there.

If you had to come up with a slogan to stop animal abuse, what would it be?

The slogan I will come out with regarding animal abuse, I will say “Animals’ rights matter too”. Just like humans' glamour for their rights to be protected, I think animals' rights also need to be protected.

We cannot be fighting for our rights not to be infringed upon and at the same time depriving animals of living their own lives void of our disturbances.

I believe that if animals' rights are protected, then they will live happily and we will also enjoy them.
