GI Joe Wrath of Cobra Gameplay Trailer Released
GI Joe was a popular cartoon back in the 80’s that saw varying success in reimagined cartoon entries through the years. There was even an animated movie and two live action movies, decades later, to add to the lore of the toy line. Videogames have been a part of the licensing out of this toy line as well, a few Nintendo Entertainment System games, an Atari 2600 release, several computer game releases in the 80s and early 1990’s then…nothing till almost 2010. There is a gap of nearly two decades before gamers got another GI Joe game on PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, mobile, Nintendo Wii, etc with GI Joe The Rise of Cobra. Since then, gamers would have to wait over a decade before getting a game we could keep in GI Joe Operation Blackout (mobile titles that were delisted as usual).
Now we have GI Joe Wrath of Cobra coming for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation platforms. No word as of this writing if we will see an Xbox or PlayStation version of this retro brawler.
A Lot of Hate
Going over to the official gameplay trailer on IGN’s YouTube we can see in the comments, a lot of concern over this game. People complain about the art, animation, physics, etc.
My take on this situation is, this is clearly a homage to brawlers of the 80s and early 90’s. Smaller sprites, repeating enemies unless they were tougher than normal, etc.
It is part of the charm of these style games. To me, this is being created with a strong X-Men the Arcade Game vibe in mind.
What Wrath of Cobra is Not
Plain and simple, I do not think Wrath of Cobra is being marketed as a competitor to newer releases such as Streets of Rage 4. SoR4 was clearly marketed as a continuation of that franchise, Wrath of Cobra is more paying respects to Streets of Rage 1, X-Men the Arcade Game, Golden Axe, etc. Simpler times, before mega-super-ultra combos were added.
For me, this is a reminder of a simpler time, I am excited to see this release and hope it does well. The GI Joe universe is so rich and could easily support so many genres of gaming, hopefully we see more of those in the future.
