Chess algorithm is complex and there is too many free advanced software doing very well. It's just usually not worth the time and effort from the indie developer, except if it's an exercise.
Unless, of course, devs want to remake it into more of a PC gaming experience. There are many alternatives to Battle Chess also doing their own thing.
Great points there. Completely makes sense too. Considering the limitations of the Atari 2600 hardware it is probably not viable for a true one player option.
