True Lies is an action shooting game in top view based on the 1994 action comedy film of the same title. It was developed by Beam Software and Acclaim Entertainment was the publisher. The Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega Mega Drive/Genesis versions were released during the same year.

We liked that Arnold Schwarzenegger movie (many Filipinos are fans) and we liked this game too during that time!

The Story

As special agent Harry Tasker, it is up to you to prevent a stolen nuclear bomb from exploding and stop the terrorist Crimson Jihad group! Experience all the action of the mega-hit movie and none of the corny romance!

The Graphics and Sound

The character models are tiny and the level design is kind of weak. The explosions look kind of good though, and the flamethrower effects are okay when igniting an enemy and watching him burn. The blood effects are pretty good, as are the jet and helicopter models. Some pictures of the movie are in here. They are shown during cutscenes and with story text on the bottom.

The music is low and nothing to be excited about. The sound effects of gunfire are the only good thing. But the explosions sound below average.

The Gameplay

This game is at least fun, although it is rather simple, it provides excitement and some replay value. Like in the movie, you play a government special agent (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movie) stopping the bad guys. The action is mostly in a top-down view. You get an arsenal at your disposal to use. Once a weapon or ammo for it has been acquired, it will appear in the weapon panel.

Your weapons include a flamethrower, various firearms, grenades, and an anti-personnel mine. You can get health packs and extra life pick-ups. You go through 10 levels of non-stop shooting action. There is even a level of you flying a Harrier jet pursuing the terrorists and blowing up their vehicles like in the movie!

The controls are easy and simple. The gameplay is good if you like some violent action to cool off.

My Verdict

True Lies is a pretty solid title, not much in terms of graphics and sound, but it sure makes up for that in the action fun, shooting department. If you are a fan of the movie or of Arnold Schwarzenegger, then you might like this one.

Get some good old, shooting fun playing it on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis console or play it on a great emulator.

Let's keep on gaming in the free world!
