Paperboy is an arcade video game developed and published by Atari Games in 1985. Tengen got the rights to release a version for the Sega Genesis in 1992.

I never got to play the Nintendo NES version. But I am glad I got to play this one during the early 1990s.

The Story

Ride your agile bike - loaded with tightly-rolled newspapers and magazines - through a hilarious, always changing neighborhood. Score big points by tossing those papers into their subscribers' mailboxes and decks. Just do not miss, or you will lose a customer for every missed throw.

Now, for the real fun: score mega points by throwing your load on non-subscribers' homes, smashing windows, lamps and statues! But watch out for drunk drivers, punk skateboarders, remote control toy cars and other obstacles. They can mess up your day damn fast. After work, do the Training Course, a dirt bike style bonus round that will test your guts and biking skills to the max!

The Graphics and Sound

The graphics are somewhat good and the neighborhoods are pretty nicely detailed giving it a bit of realism in several ways.

The sounds and music is a little decent and can become a bit competitive and also the Paperboy character repeats himself sometimes but it is nothing too big to ruin the game or make it damn monotonous.

The Gameplay

Paperboy is somewhat addictive and fun. As the titular Paperboy, you drive your bike through the local neighborhood delivering newspapers and magazines and avoiding anything that can screw up your day. These obstacles can become more difficult as you progress through the days.

Your main goal is to deliver to subscribers of the newspaper and become a pro at it. Sounds okay but this game has 3 difficulties that are each challenging in it's own way and also somewhat different. The difference in the local neighborhoods when you select one of the difficulties make for better variety in gameplay and also making it a little more fun.

The gameplay is also of the arcade style and like many arcade games of the time, it keeps track of your score.

There is also a nice 2 player mode. There, you can at least take turns or just compete to see who does the better score. Or you two just play for the fun of it. The controls are easier to get used to and the game has no problems as far as gameplay goes which is damn good.

My Verdict

Paperboy is a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive classic that will keep you amused alone or with a friend always. I thnk that this classic is going to be timeless as long as newspapers exist!

Go play this fun game on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive or play it on your favorite and trusty emulators.

Let's keep on gaming in the free world!
