Kendo Rage, originally titled Makeruna! Makendō in Japan, is an action-packed video game developed by Datam Polystar and released in 1993 for the Super Nintendo/Super Famicom. The game revolves around Kendo Magic and carries the message of 'Do Not Lose!' in its Japanese title. The English version of the game was published by SETA.

Cute high school girls in mini-skirts fighting evil seem to be the rage (or fetish) in Japan since the late 1980s. And this game seems to cash on it as well.

The Story

Come along with Jo as she embarks on the most extraordinary summer vacation ever. Jo's passion lies in kendo, the traditional Japanese art of fencing, prompting her parents to send her to Japan for training under the guidance of the legendary sword master, Osaki sensei. However, Osaki is no ordinary master; despite being a great swordsmaster, he has a unique appearance with green hair and a cyberpunk vibe.

Adding to the bizarre adventure, Osaki surprises Jo with a mystical talisman capable of transforming her into a superhero straight out of the funky seventies. Prepare yourself for a whirlwind of excitement as you witness the wildest and most enjoyable action-packed moments ever. Kendo Rage is a sensation that will leave you craving for more!

The Graphics and Sound

This game looks like a comedic anime, evident from the comical portrayal of the fake Jo, who serves as a boss you encounter. The enemies encountered throughout the game have a sense of goofiness, despite Jo unleashing powerful flame and lightning attacks. The lighthearted and humorous atmosphere remains consistent, even during intense battles.

Moreover, one entertaining instance involves Jo attempting to prevent her skirt from flying up in embarrassment while hilariously tumbling down a forty-foot cliff.

However, the game's audio department is a mix bag. The sound effects are rather unremarkable. But the music gets the job done. The music ranges from light-hearted to adrenaline-pumping.

The Gameplay

You step into the shoes of Jo, a student sent to Japan to learn the art of Kendo. However, before she can reach the academy, she must navigate through a multitude of Anime-style foes who stand in her way. The levels are brimming with good animation, a rarity in fast-paced platformer games. Armed with her trusty Kendo staff, she bravely advances towards the school's entrance.

Each level proves to be quite lengthy, filled with numerous enemies to defeat. Progression requires Jo to overcome end-level bosses, which range from a cute version of herself to a comical trio of fish that. Despite their funny appearance, many of these bosses present a considerable challenge, with some being particularly tough to beat.

As if that wasn't enough, in level seven, you must face all the previous bosses again, making the gameplay frustratingly difficult.

Replay value is up to you. Getting through the easy mode is quite difficult, as Jo can only endure a total of four hits. I must say it is quite challenging. If you are up for something that will test your patience (or sanity), the hard mode is the way to go.

My Verdict

Kendo Rage is just an average platform game in a gaming world full of platform games. The humor sets it a bit above its peers. But if you only look for the gameplay, other games got it better.

Play it on the reliable Super Nintendo/Super Famicom or play it on a great emulator.

Let's keep on gaming in the free world!
