Astellia Online is a MMORPG developed by the Korean company Studio 8 that launched for the western market in September 2019 after having been available to Korean players for a while and some Closed Betas earlier in 2019. It is available in 4 languages: English, Korean, French and German. The game calls itself a “Classic MMORPG” and thus features the holy trinity of MMORPGs: Healer, Tank, DPS. Despite being classic, Astellia Online features one thing that makes it special and innovative: The Astel System, that also gives the game its name.

Immediately after creating your character in a polished and easily to access character creation, where you can choose between 5 classes -- 3 of them DPS -- you are introduced to the most basic features of the game like controls in a tutorial. There, you also obtain a horse so you do not have to slowly walk around at any given point in the game. You will also get your first Astels and learn how to control them. Every class obtains the Astel “Rota,” and another Astel depending on your chosen class.

After that, you, the Astellian, get directly thrown into the continent of Maglev which is currently in war against the Demons. Any more information would spoil the well-done storyline of the game at this point.

Once you are done leveling up to level 50, which is the current maximum, you will notice that each class splits up into 3 subclasses with their additional skills bringing more variety to the game. However, you will have to grind a bit more of EXP to get those leveled up. But do not think you are done after this – the major part of the game lies just ahead of you. The endgame offers various options: You can either do PvP, spend your time in the hunting grounds of Astara, Rag Rock and Greleaf or enjoy various types of Dungeons with your friends.

Like (almost) every MMORPG, Astellia Online also features a diverse crafting and gathering system. One character can learn every single crafting profession; however, you can only learn one gathering profession per character, thus you will need more than 1 character if you want to gather everything on your own. The game also has a cash shop, but they only sell costumes, mounts, skins for your Astels and some convenience items there. Astellia Online is a P2W-free zone.

But let us focus a bit more on what makes this game stand out amongst others of the genre: The Astel System.

Astels are friendly little creatures that will help you out in combat. You can summon up to 3 of them at the same time. Currently, there are 35 Astels split up in 7 classes: Knights (they represent a tank), Warriors, Assassins, Archers, Mages, Muses (supportive Astels that provide buffs) and Scholars (healers). In addition, each Astel has one of 3 ranks: Servant, Guardian, and Savior. This rank decides over how powerful the Astel in general is and how much AP (resource to keep Astels summoned) they cost, with Servant being the cheapest and Savior most expensive.

Also, just like players, Astels are either physical or magical.

Pros

• Astel System
• Various Types of PvE Content in the endgame (Dungeons, Hunting Areas)
• Beautiful graphics (for a classic style MMORPG)
• Absolutely ZERO PayToWin
• Variety in classes due to 5 classes with each 3 subclasses
• Regularly scheduled events and buff weekends

Cons

• Only instanced PvP in form of various Arena modes and Avalon
• A lot, and I mean really a lot, of RNG and the following amount of grind
• PvP feels a bit unrewarding
• The content updates are regular but a bit slow

For players that like PvE and everything that comes with it, enjoy a nice story and beautiful maps, Astellia Online is the perfect MMORPG to play right now. However, if you look for epic PvP battles, you might get disappointed. Avalon is 3 faction warzone, but due to it being slightly unrewarding, it is not that actively used.
