Good day everyone and you are welcome to my blog. This week has It's own drawing challenge, and we are drawing an elephant.

I will love to start with a description of the animal.

Describe an Elephant

Elephants are mammals because they grow hair and suckle their young. Elephants are easy to identify because of the following features:

  • Their large size: they are presently the largest mammal that lives on land. Due to their size, it makes it easy to identify an elephant
  • A long proboscis: this is the nose of the elephant. We know it by it's common name, the trunk. A muscular snout used by the elephant as a hand to lift things, carry food or water into it's mouth and for breading.
  • Two tusks: which are two of the elephant's teeth that have grown out of it's mouth. The elephant uses it mostly to protect itself.
  • Their ears: elephants also grow very large ears, especially elephants from Africa. This ears help regulate the elephant's temperature. It's blood travels through a network of veins in the ears, and the elephant keeps flapping it's ears to cool itself down. Though it is also believed that the elephant uses it's ear movement to send visual information to other elephants.

Habitat and feeding
Elephants live in deserts, swamps, marshes and forests. The elephant live together in groups. Their young are known as calves while the adult female is called a caw, the male is a bull.
Some groups of elephants have a bull that leads them but most groups are made up of only females and their calves. In such instances, the oldest female known as the Matriarch takes the lead to direct the group to a better settlement which must have water nearby.
Elephants are herbivores animals, they feed on vegetation and would spend some time in water or mud.

Memory
To succeed in directing the group, the Matriarch depends on its memory of places that had both food and water. Elephants are said to have very vivid memories and can remember places and events. They are said to be able to remember the place where a beloved family member died and will mourn over the remains each time it pases along that place.

I have only seen elephants in the movies like Dumbo, Zenobia and in Net Geo Wild. Elephants are Gentle animal, with a very majestic stroll when walking but an elephant will 'charge in' when it feels threatened or it's calves are facing imminent danger.

Elephants have been hunted for food by man, most people hunt elephants for it's tusk. Many elephants have been killed just to harvest it's tusk for ivory. A few forest dwellers worship elephants as totems.
