Raw Materials

Raw Materials are those basic things that are processed into finished products. They are those things we use our tools or machines to make them into more useful things.
You could also look at raw materials as a group of unprocessed items that are converted into useful goods during a production process.
Every thing we make comes from something else. So today's lesson is about those things that gets converted into other things.

Now, enough with the definitions. Let's use some example to make the point clear.

the-bread-gcfc04e84b_1920.jpg Source the raw material for making bread is flour

When we want to bake bread, we need flour, water, butter and a bread oven. The flour, water and butter is what is being converted into bread, but the oven is just a tool, it does not become the bread. The flour, water and butter here are some of the major raw material in the production of bread.

Types of raw materials

Raw materials can be divided in to three basic categories based on where there are obtained.

  • Plant-based – these are those raw materials obtained from plants and some of these are wood, resin, cotton, vegetables, fruits, flowers, latex
  • Animal-based– materials such as wool, eggs, leather, meat, bones, fat, milk, silk are all being obtained from animals.
  • Mining-based– this group of raw materials are all natural resources like crude oil, metals, coal, clay, sand and other naturally occurring minerals which are obtained by mining the earth.

Examples of Raw materials

Gold
Gold is a raw material in the production of electronic components. Because of it's low resistance, it is a very excellent conductor for low power electronic circuits. Due to its resistance to rusting, gold is used to coat exposed electronic Surface.
Gold is also used in the making of special windshield for vehicles and glasses for homes. These special glasses doped with gold will allow light into the house but will keep off the heat from entering.

Groundnut

Groundnut is the main raw material used in the production of peanut butter and in the making of snacks. it is also the main material used in the extraction groundnut oil for cooking and for cosmetic products.

Coconut
It is the main raw material in the production of coconut oil and some coconut snacks. From coconut we also get some cosmetic products. Other raw materials you can get from coconut are coconut milk added to bread and biscuits and you may also extract coconut water.

Soyabean
It is crushed and used as feed for animals, the bean can be processed into milk. It is roasted and grind into a food supplement rich in protein.

Importance of raw materials

Raw materials are used in the making of finished products, without raw materials, we can not make goods and without the goods to make and sale we will not have income.
