Greetings to you dear kids,

Its a pleasure to welcome you all to our second lesson on social studies.
I am @udyliciouz, your social studies' teacher.

Please note that this lesson will be followed by a homework task which you are all expected to participate.

Today's lesson is transportation

What is transportation

Transportation is the act or process of moving people or goods from one place to another.
Transportation in itself is a general word used to describe the different methods people use when move themselves and their goods from place to place.

A brief History

Walking had always been the main method of transportation for humans until animals like horses and camel could be domesticated and used and latter when the wheel was invented, the animals were used to pull carts, at some points rafts, canoes and boats helped people transport passengers and goods by water.

Types of Transportation

Today we have 3 major types of transportation.

• By Land
• By Sea
• By Air

Transportation by Land

This is a form of transportation that involves the creation of roads and rail that links different places, making it easy to travel to such places by road on horse back, with a bicycle, a motorcycle or car. And by rail if you travel by train.
We use road transportation to go to work and you have been using it to go to school

Problems of land transportation

• Poor State of roads have been a real problem for this form of transportation. Some roads have developed plenty of potholes while others have bridges that are in poor condition. Roads with poor drainage are hard to use in the rain seasons
• Poorly maintained roads has been another issue with road transportation, most roads are old and when a fault develops, it is not fixed and the local people dump earth and stones in the potholes which sometimes makes it worse.
• Road congestion is another problem that comes from people moving to urban areas the road network are filled with vehicles during rush hours resulting in traffic jambs that stretches for miles.
• Accidents have also been a problem on the road. It may be as a result of other problems and my just happen regardless of the state of the road.
• The poor state of other land means of transportation like railroad, some areas do not have rail lines, while scavengers damage rails for the iron
• Environmental pollution from poorly serviced vehicles and coal powered trains have polluted our air.

Solutions

• Government should make rehabilitation of roads a priority and provide the necessary funding.
• The repairs and maintenance of roads should be done regularly using appropriate materials.
• There should be proper drainage facilities along the roads.
• Implementation of electronic Traffic control systems should be established at major junctions/ intersections.
• Provision should be made to educate the road users and also punish offenders

Transportation by Sea
Transportation by Sea involves the use of ferry, canoes, boats and ships which travels along water ways. This means of transportation helps in moving large and heavy items across long distances. It is also said to be the most less expensive means of transportation.

Problems of sea transportation

• Transportation by Sea is risky, poor weather can sink boats and ships
• Transportation by Sea is slow and poor weather can make it slower.
• There is also the problem of being attacked by pirates at sea endangering crew, passengers and goods
• most sea transportation for not follow a direct route, they make many stops on the way.
• Some times it is very different to track and goods and movement of ships
• ships are a large contributor to pollution

Solutions

• Make use of ships that do not run on coal
• Use new technology like water Canon to keep away pirates at sea.
• Ships should use digital navigation systems to help them when traveling in poor weather conditions.

Transportation by Air
This is a form of transportation that uses airplanes, jets, and helicopters to move goods and passengers from one place to another. it is currently the fastest means of transportation which allows you to move in comfort and style. One important thing about air travel is that fact that it can easily go to places where road and sea can't take you

Problems of Air transportation

• It is expensive to travel by air and very expensive to move heavy goods and equipments.
• Air plans need an airport with a runway, without this, it will not work.
• Aircraft are expensive to buy, built, operate and manage.
• Most airport are sited faraway from urban ares as they make plenty of air and noice pollution.
• Plain crashes are either difficult or impossible to survive. Causing problems for both those inboard and people on the ground.

Solution

• Setup regulations that prevents the use of old planes that make more air and noice pollution.
• Try to come up with plains that can use Soler energy or none polluting fuels like hydrogen.
