In the 21st century today, technology influences our lives almost in every way.

Ranging from food productivity and accessibility, communication, transportation systems, healthcare services, work flexibility, quick information access, online shopping/ marketing.

The commanding power of the internet has enabled world countries to come together and form ideas collectively for the advancement of humanity.

Unfortunately, over time technology has been seen to pose threats of negativity such as mental health associated issues, depression, privacy intrusion and so on.

Human beings all over the world have in one way or the other abused technology. That not withstanding, the usefulness of technology on the world cannot be over emphasized.

1.2 THE POSITIVITY AND NEGATIVITY OF TECHNOLOGY IN KIDS LIVES

It is no longer hidden that technology has become a part of our everyday life. It is very common to see kids of all ages and teenagers with digital devices.

However, the rate at which kids are handling / being exposed to these devices has knocked a call for alert.

We get to see the negative effects of technology more on the news but more to this, technology is also fused into modern educational learning, which leaves us pondering if technology has positive or negative impacts in kids lives.

Below are some of the positivity and negativity of technology in kids lives:

Positive Effects

---

• Enhanced Learning; Many educational establishments over time have embraced the use of technology in the curriculum of kids.
  Smartboards, learning rhymes,numbering, lettering, drilling games etc are part of the exercises. These aids both the teachers and kids as the kids pick up faster and even when at home practice these skills.

• Problem Solving Skills; Kids are made to find their way through challenging games Applications, of which they think and implore ways to overcome obstacles and win. These skills help them in real life situation as they able to tackle their way out of challenging situations like physical competitions, disagreements, personal hardships and other technological-based problems.

• Future Technological Leaders; It is no lie that the future greatly depends on technology and all it has to offer. With kids being exposed and being fully equipped with technology at the tender age, they would be fully ready to take over what ever comes their way in the future, they will take on tech jobs as their career and contribute to development.

Negative Effects

---

• Effects on Relationships; Kids being glued to their phones and tablets all day has caused them to lack physical intimacy with their families and even friends. They lack appropriate manner of conversation, facial expression cues and prefer chatting up on social media platforms other than meeting people in person.

• Health Problems; Kids would rather prefer to sit or lie all day on the couch fidgeting with their devices than actually involving in kids activities such as skipping, playing, running which are all forms of healthy exercises and they get too busy most times skipping meals. In the future these habits could adversely affect their health.

• Reduction in Sleep Quality; Kids get too attached to social media and all staying up and reducing their sleep time.

Sleep is very essential for kids as it aids their growth and development overall.
Kids now do not even observe their siesta any longer.

1.3 MY RATING ON THE IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY IN KIDS LIFE

In my opinion, i would rate the impact of technology in kids lives to be highly negative.

The negativity surrounding the use of technology by kids grows louder everyday.

We see more withdrawn kids, little kids getting depressed as they struggle with expressing their selves to their parents, teachers or older ones like in the case of bully or sexual abuse, more socially inept kids, device addiction, kids exposed unconsciously to immoral adult content and so on.

The negativities i have outlined under this heading is disturbing.

1.4 CONTROL OF KIDS OVER THE EXPOSURE TO CERTAIN TECHNOLOGICAL PRODUCTS?

A BIG YES.

There could be a control of kids over increased exposure to certain products of technology.

• Many smartphones today are kids friendly making it possible for parents to configure the devices to what Apps they would want their kids to access.

• Also, cable decoders allows adult supervision where selected channels for kids are entered for the kids.

• Thirdly parents needs to be strict with kids personal devices. They can accomplish this by being in control of the device; giving it to kids only when necessary, timing kids on the device; like being on their device for just 4 hours or less in a day.

Through these ways, kids exposure to technological products will be controlled and more positive impact rather than the negative impact will be felt.
