Greetings to dear friends irrespective of your location round the globe.I am sure you are fine and kicking.Steemit is a learning space and an earning space.I can't count the number of things I have learnt since I joined Steemit, they are numerous.

I have to contribute my own share of the teaching and learning process.Over the past six months I have running a mathematics lesson for kids under the steemkids community. This is to help our younger ones to develop interest in the subject.

From experience,I have observed that students dread mathematics including some adults.A situation that has led to little or no interest for the subject.Truth is that we need mathematics even in our everyday life.So let's seize this opportunity to learn more and practice more.

The main aim of this lesson series is to improve of mathematics solving skills, learn more about mathematics, foster engagement among participants and sharing of ideas.

Ratio and Proportion

For this week.We are going to discuss and solve problems involving ratio and proportion.Ratio is our main agenda.

A ratio is simply a comparison between two quantities which are having the same unit.Ratio is usually written as one of the ratio TO the other. For example 2:3 means 2 is to 3,which also means 2/3 because ratio and fraction mean the same time.

To solve problems on ratio,it is important to add up the total ratio.Divide each ratio by the total ratio, then multiply with the quantity under discussion.Lets solve some problems to help you understand the topic.

Practical Problems

Pls refer to this my video to see a visual solution to the first question.👇

1.)In a class of 20 students. The ratio of boys to girls is 2:3.Find the number of boys and the number of girls in the class.

Solution:

Ratio of boys=2
Ratio of girls=3
Total Ratio=2+3=5

•Number of boys=2/5 x 20/1
Number of boys=8

•Number of girls=3/5 x 20/1
Number of boys=12

2.)In a certain gathering. The ratio of women to children is 1:2.If there 18 people altogether. How many of them are women and how many of them are children.

Solution:

Ratio of women=1
Ratio of children=2
Total Ratio=1+2=3

•Number of women=1/3 x 18/1
Number of women=6

•Number of children=2/3 x 18/1
Number of children=12

3.)An event has men and women in attendance. The ratio of men to women is 1:4.If there are 20 women. How many people altogether attended the event.

Solution:
Ratio of men=1
Ratio of women=4
Total Ratio=1+4=5

We dont know the total number of attendees. So we can say,let the total number =y.

Number of women:(4/5) x (y/1)=20
:4y/5=20/1 cross multiplying I will have
:4y=5 x 20
:4y=100 Divide through by 4
:y=100/4=25 people

Therefore, there are 25 people in attendance of which 20 are women and so 5 are men.
men:women=5:20=1:4

4.)The sum of $60 is to shared among Obi,Ada and Uju in the ratio 1:2:3 respectively. How much will each person get.

Solution:

Obi's ratio=1
Ada's ratio=2
Uju's ratio=3
Total Ratio=1+2+3=6

•Obi's share=1/6 x 60/1
Obi's share=$10

•Ada's share=2/6 x 60/1
Obi's share=$20

•Uju's share=3/6 x 60/1
Obi's share=$30

Homework

1.)If a class of 10 pupils. The ratio of boys to girls is 1:4.How many pupils are boys and how many are girls.

2.)There are 10 greens balls in a basket and 60 blue balls in the same basket. What is the ratio of greens balls to blue balls.

3.)A gathering has men and women in attendance in the ratio 1:6.If there are 10 men.How many people altogether were in attendance.

4.)Share $500 among Helen and Jane in the ratio 2:3.Find each person's share.

The homework, question no.2 looks strange

This is answer green:blue=10:60=1:6

So the ratio of green ball to blue ball=1:6 or 1/6
